DPF's in PD engines..

Featured Replies

Yeah they take some getting up to temperature. Even going flat out on the Autobahn, laps round the nurburgring, prolonged climbs up hill or just general "spirited" driving don't have much effect on the running temperature of PD engines. I've never seen the temperature (actual temperature on maxidot) go over 95c.

Why disregard the pd170 because of dpf .

Buy one get dpf removed (or gutted) , sorted .

Now you have a top car

Unfortunately it is no longer as simple as this. Rumours have been around for a while now about tougher rules for the m.o.t for checks of a present dpf. Some have said an electronic check may happen, some have heard about pressure testing of some sort. I love my Pd 170 with a Shark map it's a lovely thing but I've been left with a bit of dissapointed by the ownership due to the amount the car regens and needing a nigh on 20 mile run every week to clear dpf lights. If i hadn't spent good money for the map i would probably have it removed. Now though, it's going to need yet another map AFTER its been taken out all in the end meaning it might not pass another m.o.t which would then involve refitting of the dpf then most likely another map!! Awful things!!

Exhaust problem fixed for £78. Phew!

Any advice on this?

It would probably require the use of a private road!!

Uh-huh!

If you haven't seen the DPF light then just continue to drive as you have been.

A clear sign of the DPF performing a regen is the RPM sitting at 1,000RPM. This is when you need to sit at a constant speed at 2,500RPM or more for a few miles if possible.

But none of at testing is currently in place and none has been announced in for future years so why worry so much ?? I have not yet heard of, or experienced a car failing an mot for a gutted dpf

You won't hear of any failures as yet because it is still a visual check i believe. If the tester can't see it presume it's there and working. It has been debated several times on here so we probably can't add anything new to it. The talk is though, somethings cooking!!

correct...   and the talk is somethings cooking...   but there is always a rumour mill and there has been for the last 4 years or so and nothing as yet other than rumour and talk...!   There will be plenty of warning of a change so stop worrying and just get on with it!...   or stop wittering!

Don't think there's any need for that attitude. I thought it was a forum where topics are open for discussion. I'm entitled to express my opinion and things we've heard as are you and everyone else. So no i won't stop thanks!!

Apologies - just fed up of seeing the same panicking and comments for the last 4 years for no good reason...

Apology accepted. Yeah fair enough buddy i didn't know the rumours had been around quite that long. I know vosa issued all kinds of statements about it basically upping the anti around June last year. You may be right though there is maybe sod all they can do and scaremongering is all they have. Last thing I'll say on this here though, my son is a trainee mechanic and he's heard about quite a few garages near us that have been prosecuted for removing dpf's. Maybe the idea is stop the source so to speak it may just be enough to deter owners from removing them. Last word i promise!!

Is there any law that prohibits removing DPF? Some lawyer should find out that.

Anyway if it's prohibited in UK then you may try to do it in Ireland for example. :)

Not removing them, but there is for then using the car on the public highway.

That's odd, prosecuted for removing a dpf. How would you fit a new one without removing the old one first? :-) But seriously, that's another one of those old wive's stories...

Julian.

My lad knows some of the owners. It has happened.

I didnt have mine removed, I have it upgraded! ;-)

Anyway PD + DPF = headache

Any advice on this?

Having had my PD140 2.0 BMM Octi estate for around a year now I have gotten to know when its doing or trying to do a regen, basically I find it starts with a very slight mis at around 1800rpm and continues to get worse until you have reached the point where its ready to do a regen, basically I have found a section of road which unbelievably is around 2 m iles long and is slightly up hill all the way so I just go to my "local road" and stick it in fourth gear and bring the revs to around 2600rpm which should bring you up to around 55-60mph and it clears or should I say carries out its regen within that short distance so far every time. Even when the dpf light has come on if I get to the local road before the coil light start flashing it seems to work every time at the specified revs and gear selection. Its taken me almost a year to get to grips with knnowing when its trying to regen, On another note I drove 770miles to lower France a few weeks back and didn't notice any regenerations during that time but I guess the exhaust was nice and hot and it performed them seamlessly, having said that on the way down I drove from Bristol to Newhaven Port got on the fairy and as we were coming off the ferry the dpf light started flashing but was gone within a few miles of decent road as I was towing a heavy load at the time so was hot fairly quickly. Came back up another 770 miles and didn't notice anything on that trip, so if you are doing a lot of town driving it seems they do block faily quickly around as early as 450-500miles but if you can find a suitable bit of road you should be fine.

You're correct. Its just illegal to use the vehicle on the road:

It is an offence under the Road vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations (Regulation 61a(3)) to use a vehicle which has been modified in such a way that it no longer complies with the air pollutant emissions standards it was designed to meet. Removal of a DPF will almost invariably contravene these requirements, making the vehicle illegal for road use. The potential penalties for failing to comply with Regulation 61a are fines of up to £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a light goods vehicle.

Open and shut as far as I can see. I just went petrol and saved myself the hassle.

So it is the user rather than the remover who gets prosecuted then.

Step 1: Gut the DPF, code out the sensors.

Step 2: Enjoy many, many miles of hassle free motoring.

New laws on emissions would only affect new cars, the existing checks would stay as they are for older cars depending on what euro emissions level they are at,

my 07 pd vrs with or without a dpf would never meet the same requirements as a brand new vrs tdi .
