Anyone tried 215/50/17 summer tyres?

Featured Replies

I am thinking of fitting 215/50/17 summer tyres on my 1.6 tdi 4x4 2014 Octavia estate .

225 45 17s are too harsh when going through potholes.

Will they fit?How will the car be affected?

I don't have any experience with that dimension, I assume they will feel a little more comfortable (talking of marginal differences here).

Depending of width of the rim, but they will probably fit, the circumference are 2% bigger. I have 205/50/17 as winter tyres on mine 1,8 TSI 4x4.

Thanks for your reply

My reasons for considering this dimension is that i need a litttle bit extra height (6mm) and a fraction more cushion form the tyres,

My rim width is 7 inch.

I just hope they will not bump in the wheel arches when compresesd.

Are the wheel arches same size as the 2014 Scout's ?

I don't know much about the Scout, but I assume the arches are the same and the difference are the outside plastic trim (and ride height obviously). 205, 215 and 225 tyres all fits on 7 in rims. The extra tyre height will not cause any interference with the arches.

Do you know the rim ET?

Rim ET is 49.

I am also worried that altering the factory setup might put more stress to the transmision and suspension and lead to premature reliability issues.

Any one knows how much full economy is achieved though downsizing to 205 width (for the same tyre type )

You'll only get 6mm increase in sidewall height, which is roughly the difference between fresh and worn out tyres. Do you think it'll make any noticeable difference?

Everything you are talking about here are marginal differences. Octavia's are equipped with variable rims and tyres from factory, and they allow alot of variants. Check owners manual.

Generally (if same brand), by using narrower tyres you will gain less fuel comsumption, less stress to steering. By using higher profile you will gain better ride comfort, more pot hole cushion, but less grip in inspired driving.

The ET gives the tread width, and can legally be varied within +-15 mm (in Norway anyway) from factory setup.

The differences I talk about are noticeable during a direct comparison, but marginal!

So, all in all it is just your preferences.

This is true, yet 6mm coresponds to 11% more sidewall to soak up the bumps. Assuming tyre brand and pressures are equal the difference is noticeable. I noticed a ride improvement moving from /40's to /45's, and also a big difference when bumping up and down kerbs. Overall it will certainly not be night and day, but if your old tyres are worn it will not cost any extra (and may actually be a little cheaper) to try. On the 4x4 you certainly do not need wide 225's for traction, and 205/50/17's are another option.

Will definitely go for 205 50 17s or 55 s (11m height gain-probably too much..?)

Propably Michelin Primacy 3 in XL type.

Cushion is of outmost importance to me.

I also plan on fitting 215/50/17 for the summers. I saw several guys on drive.ru to have done this switch and it looks nice.

Just google octavia 215/50/17 and you'll find images. True, tyres are noticeably more expensive than 225/45, but I also don't want to worsen the ride much.

That, and are quite rare as well. Maybe its wiser to get standard 225/45/17 if you want bigger tyres look wise, I doubt it will be much defference in comfort.

I dont think the difference in ride is going to be that much different. The Octavia is not exactly renowned for its handling on potholed and damaged roads. On my old one I went from 16" wheels to 18" wheels with really low profile tyres and the difference was minimal. it was not particularly nice on 16s, and on 18s it felt the same.

The 6mm difference between 215/50 and 225/45/17 will not make much difference, and will give the appearance of the tyre being further into the wheel arch.

It all comes down to what roads the car is driven in.

Tdis are nose heavy and should be efficiently shock absorbed in order to maintain long term reliability.

Each and every gain in supleness without affecting handling is welcome.

50 profile is rewnowned for being the perfect balance...

What worries me the most is the long term effect  of a non stantard dimension like 215/50/17 at the 4x4's drivetrain reliability (ball/joints/driveshafts/etc..)

Don't want  to have any issues whatsoever.

Does anybody know ?

Hi

When and if I end up getting an Octy 4x4 I will be planning on using the winter tyres I already have for my existing car. They are 205/50/17 which I think are (officially) the size that corresponds to the 225/45/17 that are fitted as standard to the model I am looking at.

I cannot find it at the moment but I did see a list of standard fitted Octy3 tyre sizes on this forum a while ago, I dont think 215/50/17 was on it, whereas 205/50/17 definately was.

I think you are only talking fractions either way and not as much as can be expected in the loss in rolling radius due to normal tyre wear.

But if you want to stay completely safe for peace of mind, I would think if you picked a size that was fitted as standard to other Octavias you would have less of an issue than if you use a size that is not

Any reason why 205/50/17 would be a problem?

I ran 225/55r16 for 75,000km and have been on 225/50r17 for 25,000km. (About +1" in diameter from my OEM tyres).  Car is remapped & several other engine & chassis mods.  Gearbox etc hasn't shown any signs of going backwards.

As I said in the other thread  235/45r17 are the answer to your questions and priced right.

I wouldn't fit xl tyres. These are extra load and will have a stiffer sidewall. Will be counter productive.
