Tinting windows

Featured Replies

I am very much looking forward to getting my new 1.6TDi SE in a couple of weeks or so.

I am wondering about having the windows tinted darker. Just the B pillar backwards and rear window.

Can anyone give me any idea as to how much this is likely to cost me and would i be best getting the dealer to do it or a third party independent place???

Thanks in advance

I would think somewhere between £200 and £300

Is that at the dealers???

4 years ago I paid £125 to get my mk2 done, from independent place.

That sounds more like it. Lol.

My Octy will be mine on Sunday  I decided against the Sunset that looked rather too pale. I telephoned my local tinter 'Herts Tints' last December who quoted £140 any tint from B pillar backwards. I thought it rather a coincidence that it was the same price as the Sunset! I wonder if now it's £200 to match the latest Sunset price :(

Will call a few local places to get some quotes I think.

I paid £185 for mine. It was slightly higher than average but the guy worked from a decent workshop and I'd seen some of his work before so was willing to pay slightly more.

No dealer will do the tints themselves, they will have a contractor come in and do the job. The sales rep gave me the details of the contractors they use regularly and I called them directly. I paid £220.

You might be able to find it cheaper however beware of the cowboys as they need to take the door cards out and you dont to be left with rattley doors.

Had my last four cars done by Pentagon Glass (2 x Octavia's) using the SupaGlass tints the stuff that can't be broken from the outside, so added security. Did a great job plus comes with a lifetime warranty. Also when there was the issue on the Octy MKII rear quarter lights which Skoda replaced on a recall/known issue they tinted the rear quarter lights for free. The one I use is in Manchester run by Mark Kay but there are other depots across the country. www.pentagonglasstech.com/

A skilled tinter doesn't have to remove the door cards

I definitely don't want them to have to remove the door cards to be honest.

Me neither!

To those who have had this done are there any points to watch out for? I know the film is heat stuck on but am dubious about the edges, where the channels are  and whether to top edge gets damaged where it goes into the top channel. Also if the surface is easily damaged.

I have read not to use any cleaner containing ammonia as I guess this attacks the film.

Anyone used Herts Tints ?

I had my Octy sedan tinted 1 week after I bought it in July 2008.  The tinter used a non-reflective 3M tint in grey (red car) at 20%VLT (which is illegal but has never caused an issue with police or at the yearly registration check).

I've used this tinter on a previous car (Subaru Legacy Gen 2) and he's got a great reputation on many car forums so I knew his work would be good.  The Octy is the 6 th car I've had tinted (and no issues with any of them).  I did have a 1998 Golf Cabrio and the aftermarket tint on that was rubbish so I can unsderstand why you'd be concerned.

Almost 7 years later and it looks as good as the day it was fitted.  No scratches, no lifting, no bubbling.  Sure if you treat it badly it will look like rubbish but it would take some doing.

Cleaning is with a cheap, household grade microfibre cloth dampened with a bit of water.  You can use ammonia free window cleaner but it's probably best to look for "tint safe" on the bottle eg: Meguiar's Glass Cleaner or similar.

Haven't got any with the front window shut and the rear isn't as dark as the photo looks
