Built in Camera as Dash cam?

Featured Replies

Since my car already has a built in camera used for traffic sign recognition, I wonder if it would be possible by some magic to use it as a Dash Cam as well?

Anyone ever done some investigation on this?

/Cheers

I have wondered this, surprised manufacturers don't give it as an option

Interesting - I've often thought about this. There are many car manufacturers which already have cameras pre-installed, I'm thinking more along the lines of Range Rover/Land Rover and Jaguar; surely it is only a matter of time before one manufacturer offers the option of being able to record and store this data to the head unit/SD card etc.

Reference the system on the Octy - I don't know anything about it.

Its no doubt designed and manufacturered for its specific purpose. Dont get me wrong you probably could get it to function as a video camera with the right know-how but it will then probably not work as a lane assist/high beam assist camera.

Nice, suppose it will be widely available as a fitted option in a couple of years, just like sat nav started out

Won't be long before most manufacturers add front and rear cams as an option. Some countries already require use of dash cams by law so it makes sense.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the camera is black and white and low resolution for fast processing.

One of the best things about my £50 dash cam is that it turns itself on if the car is knocked in the car park. I watched it happen when somebody tapped my roof.

If my camera was witness to anything on the motorway which is very likely, I would rather they impound the camera as evidence and not my car!

Sounds like a good dash cam, which model is it? Had a look around and the mini 0805 looks to be one of the best for quality and value

Other versions of the same system are in stock if you search. Think carefully about the GPS logger as it records your speed. Not sure I would want to submit that as evidence when I m late for work!

But speed is easy to calculate from the footage so GPS or not makes no difference.

There is a group buy going ahead on the mini 0806 at the moment

I'll be interested to see if the 806 is any better for DAB interference than the 805.

Russia is one country I have visited where every car has one fitted. Apparently insurance companies insist on them.
