Different Xenon's

Featured Replies

Hi all,

As above how do I tell if I have Xenon shutters or not? I only ask as I was checking with VCDS today to see if my car has the low washer level warning fitted and subsequently couldn't find it in the long code helper but did notice that when scrolling through Cent elec module that it was ticked as IIRC Bi-xenon without shutter?

Can anyone give me any pointers on this as some of you know I have had coding issues before with certain things turned off or activated when they shouldn't be and with not finding the washer warning to at least check its actually been "ticked" or the correct coding entered for it, as being fitted, before checking else where to see why it doesn't work!!

Hi Mike,

It has factory Xenons and washers fitted, I just remember when looking with long code helper I found the two types and because of other coding "issues" I have had, I wondered which is the standard type when factory fitted? As the coding which is "ticked" now says Bi-Xenon which I thought was a later type not fitted to an 08 plate.

However with regard to the low level warning, it ran out the other day and no warning displayed so need to check coding as the pervious owner had disabled cruise control for some odd reason therefore I can't rule out more odd behaviour like disabling the washer warning!.

Cheers for the reply

All MkII Octavia's with headlight washers have the low washer fluid warning, at least in the UK.

I have a very strong feeling mine has been disabled then, back out tomorrow with the laptop it is!

If the low washer level warning is coded but not fitted, the light will be on all the time. If your car has the headlight washers, then it may have the low washer warning -- if no headlight wash, then no warning.

As far as the xenons without shutters, it is either coded for factory xenons or for an aftermarket non-canbus HID kit. Have a look at the light switch -- if there is a thumbwheel to manually adjust the height of the headlight beam, the car does not have factory xenons.

Either way, you have either an HID kit or xenons as the lights will not work correctly if coded for xenons with halogens fitted.

 Hi Mike ,

I could be wrong but I have  factory xenons and a thumbwheel  but the thumbwheel does not adjust the main beam only the dipped beams .

The thumb-wheel with my factory Xenon's changes the brightness of the dash lights only - it has no control over any of the external lights positioning.

I thought only Bi Xenons had shutters, The MKII Octavia Vrs only had Xenons for the headlights, the main beam was an ordinary bulb. Therefore no shutter

The shutter on Bi Xenons controls the headlight/main beam as it's the same bulb

Disclaimer:-  I think

This thread might be helpful...

This is the facelift MkII Octavia vRS, but the washer bottle and sensor location are identical to the pre-FL...

This is looking through where the front fog light would normally be...

Hi Mike, I could be wrong but I have  factory xenons and a thumbwheel  but the thumbwheel does not adjust the main beam only the dipped beams .

If you have this switch set-up then you have factory fitted xenon headlights. Dipped beam only (therefore not-bi-xenon). Main beam is traditional halogen.

Note the lack of manual headlight height adjustment (on cars equipped with xenon headlights this function is performed automatically using sensors on the suspension).

This is from my MkII Octavia with factory fit xenon's, the only adjustment is for the brightness of the dashboard lights...

If you have standard halogen headlights you DO get the knob / thumb-wheel that is used to manually adjust the height of the headlight beams, as pictured here...

Ooops

            I'm wrong again

Excellent, to clear this up I definitely have factory fitted Xenons which are NOT Bi-xenon just normal!

I have also looked today and I have the level sensor in the washer bottle, was easier to remove the O/S headlamp and look down and from there I checked the coding which was wrong, so I changed the relevant digit by adding 4 and it would appear I'm sorted :-)

many thanks for the replies/help

Silver, your armoury of lights related imagery is truly astounding. Just ask the lightmeister!!!

Don't forget his in depth knowledge of Skoda Servicing charges, "I'll give you £259 for an oil and filter change!"

True!!

another tell tale sign of factory fitted xenons or not is by looking at the headlight assembly from the outside.

where the "octavia" in engraved on the side, if there is notch - it has factory fitted xenons.  this is because of the dynamic turning feature of the low beam xenons.

if the notch is not there, then the car was not fitted with xenons from the factory.
