Arch rub after lowering

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I'm about to have coilovers put on my monte to drop it, obviously the wheels will run the arches if too low. I've heard about people cutting a hole in the plastic that sits in the wheel arch, to allow the top of the wheel to fit through, is there any truth in this and if so, is it a good idea?

Thanks in advance

Personally I just wouldn't run that low. I did on my old corsa c on coilovers and I just removed the linings completely. made an awful noise.

Yeah I don't want to remove them for that reason, the noise will be crazy, I was thinking a small cut out just to fit the top of the wheel through, wouldn't have to be big so I can't see it being as issue, I'm just guessing though haha

Surely if you're putting the tyre up so high as to cut out the arch liner there's a risk of rubbing when you turn the wheel?

It's going to depend on where the tyres touch. In the straight-ahead they're more likely to touch the return lips on the outer wings than the arch liners.

On lock, they're most likely to touch (front only) on the inners about level with the hubs.

In roll it's anyone's guess; I've seen cars where there was a bare polished metal patch on the strut tube below the spring perch where the tyre bulged and rubbed.

In bump, maybe the tops of the liners (front) and/or rear wells. In that event, you maybe need bigger bump stops, not least because you're getting close to running out of travel and the wheel rates going infinite. If you do that, you are almost certainly going to spin, regardless of what your name is!

Thanks for that advise! I thought about bump stops too!

Just come across a new problem! The garage have told me that the anti roll bar curves around the drive shaft, so when they lowered it, the drive shaft was running on the arb and causing damage. Can I solve this with a new roll bar does anybody know?

My new car rear tyres rubs the arches...

...think previous owner tried rolling out the arches..

That is:

Remove wheel

Attach rolling arches gadget to wheel hub

Rotate gadget so pushes/rolls out the arches to give more clearance

I don't agree.

But that's what he did - eeek!

Cant even stick a finger in there!

Any uneven road or speed bump and i had it :(

So did the sensible thing - and increased the coilover height last week :)

Shortened drop links are designed for exacty this problem. They should allow the anti roll bar to be in a different position and still function proplerly.

So until the new drop links arrive, is it safe to drive without the arb? then put it back on when the drop links get here

Dont go so low mate all the crap and crud willgo through the hole anf settle inside the arch, it will start corroding realy early. Just a thought could you not get a biscuit tin and heat the arch liner up till its soft with a hot air gun then press the biscuit tin into the softened platic and keep doing that until you form the liner where you want it? Might need multiple hot air guns and maybe not a biscuit tin but you get the idea. Id rather.try that first as once you cut that liner your committed.

dont have any problems with 2 -3 ppl in car . only when driving with 4 or 5 wich happends like once a year. maybe fast autobahn bumps

Personally wouldn't risk it as it will significantly affect the handling of the car.
