Warning triangle

Featured Replies

I am off to mainland europe soon, and among all the legal stuff that has to be carried is a warning triangle. I believe uk cars are not supplied ith a triangle, becuse mine wasn't. So in the boot of my Octy estate on the right hand side are two elastic hoops. Are they there to hold a triangle in its case ? If so there must be a correct size warning triangle box to fit.

Any ideas anyone ?

Good call on that one, I'll try mine in there. I put a  slim fire extinguisher in there for a bit, but its currently holding the dogs bottle of water lol.

I bought this pack to drive in europe, as you'll need the high vis jackets and breathalisers too. The spare bulbs are a bit pointless as I cant change the headlights anyway, but still a requirement.

Breathalisers are not a requirement now.

I have all the parafinalia required to drive in mainland Europe, i am curious about the triangke because it is the second thing you need in the event of an incident. It needs to at hand and not packed in with the spare wheel under all the luggage.

I had one out of an 2000 Audi S3 which i kept then put in the Skoda (Mk II not III admittedly) but it fits in there (on mine) a treat.

The Audi triangle (in its case) is 17 x 2.5 x 1 inches ~ 425 x 63 x 25 mm

That's where it's supposed to be located:

Don't the UK models really not have it? I thought it would be a legal requirement everywhere in the EU.

so did I. I don't have a triangle there. But I do have a box that came with the car, and it should contain 2 high-vis vests, triangle and a few things to stop people bleeding all over the car in case of an accident. But I have to shamefully admit that I have been to busy driving the car than to check the content of the box...which I will duly do tomorrow.

I don't know where you plan to go, but if you go to Spain, you need to get 2 triangles (as well as 1 safety vest per passenger).

In France, 1 triangle and 1 jacket is enough.

Warning trianges are pretty generic...they tend to come in rectangular orange plastic case that will fit most warning triangle receptacles.

My two company cars came with kit bags with all that kind of stuff so needless to say my car has a triangle and first aid pack in the right hand compartment, also a yellow vest in the drivers underseat storage.

I hope never to have to use them but good to have them there just in case...or if I do at some point take the car abroad.

Breathalisers are not a requirement now.

Be careful in France - a friend drives to Spain & unfortunately was stopped for speeding in France. The policeman asked to see his 2 breathalysers which he had in his car. He said that had he not had them he would have to pay an on the spot fine. The law in France says they are obligatory, but the penalty is not. As the 2 only cost £1 each I would think it is better to have them rather than trying to argue the case at the roadside with a foreign policeman.

The law in France says they are obligatory, but the penalty is not.

True, in a weirdly ridiculous way. One of the last acts of Sarko if I remember correctly. And considering that the breathalysers are pretty much useless you have to wonder who benefited from the whole thing. The penalty wasn't optional at the start, they just changed it when they realised how ridiculous it all was.

Back OT: I checked the little bag I got with the car. And as I suspected it contains 2 high-vis vests, one triangle and one onboard pharmacy.

I thought the bag came standard courtesy of Skoda. Unfortunately I can't add any pics, since I have been a naughty boy and uploaded too many to the site it seems.

That's a peculiar law to say the least. As far as I'm concerned the police are the only people who need to have breathalyzers.

If you feel the need to use a breathalyzer to check if you're ok to drive, you probably aren't.

You can forget breathalyzers if you come to France.

Even for the people who actually bought one, the date of validity as expired since long.

Two trips to the mainland this year. France and Belgium in May then France in July. I was mainly curious about the fitting position for the triangle in the elastic straps. It is shown on diagram B on Kallekilponen's post. Be nice to have the genuine one to have the green case.

Standard after market triangle in case fitted the dedicated space on my O2, but same on my new O3 is much smaller. Got Skoda branded one that fits perfectly from Skoda dealer at reasonable price.

Same here - with the VBF in the estate there isn't a lot of room for the triangle - it seems designed so that only the OEM one will fit

Warning triangles are pretty much standard. I got mine from the AA. Comes packed in a long slim(ish) red case.

The Octy is 'simply clever'. Certainly the hatchback. On the inside of the rear of the boot, between the rear lights, there is a recess, and 2 straps (not elastic hoops). This is designed for the warning triangle, and mine fits perfectly.

I cant however promise that an estate is the same, but check here.

Sorry, haven't looked at the pictures posted above, so not sure if they show the same place.

In the estate it straps to the side recess, behind the wheel well. Right next to the first aid kit.

Yeah just seen the pics now, ta.

I don't recall seeing any straps to hold a first aid kit in my hatchback. May have to look again lol

I don't suppose you have the part number on the warning triangle do you, as I have a MK2 one, which doesn't fir there and the dealer can't seem to locate it.

Re breathalysers. As I have a motorhome I follow forums regarding these . It has been mentioned many times there is no need to carry them. Early on the police did not seem to have been told they were no longer required. It seems only one make was allowed and as above they are now out of date and no longer available. That said many ferry company still try and persuade yo to buy one on the ferry, prob because they have thousands to try and shift.

My estate came with the skoda warning triangle fitted exactly as shown in the picture from kallekilponen.

It is a very thin case compared to my previous warning triangle (Ford) & the elastic hoops are designed to hold this thin case.

I will try to grab a photo & the part number on my way home tonight when I go back to the car.

However, If you have the plastic dividers at the sides (I think all Octy have at least 1 side divider), you could also just drop a bigger one in there.

I think they are standard across mainland Europe, but not in the UK.

I got mine from superskoda when I ordered a few things can't remember the price but it wasn't expensive and I was trying to get as much stuff in a box as I could
