Reversing sensors and Canbus

Featured Replies

I have searched this without success.  In fact I read so many threads on reversing sensors and cameras early hours this morning I fried my brain.

So apologies if the answer is here already.  My 2010 (60) plate VRS Octavia does not have sensors and as I am having great difficulty in judging where the bumper is I thought it would be best to fit some before it is too late.  OK I have seen that they are cheap enough on fleabay and I have read the threads about how to fit them and take the bumper off even.  What I am still unsure of though is can I just wire them into the reversing light or do I need to have some gadget to connect to the Canbus?

My car is fitted with the Bolero so does that have the ability to show anything with the sensors or a camera?  Again I am unsure of the differences between the Amusden, Columbus or the Bolero as there seems to be differences between each version of each type.  My car is fitted with Maxidot if that helps.

Hi, which kit are referring to, please post a link so I can help further. If you wire them direct to the reverse lights you may experience issues due to the canbus.

Hi Radders,

I haven't picked a specific kit just as yet.  There are many to choose from on fleabay hence my question about the canbus.  Someone on here mentioned the Cobra so I looked at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COBRA-4-EYE-REVERSING-AID-PARKING-SENSORS-R294-0258-PARKMASTER-BRAND-NEW-/251855501410?pt=UK_Photography_DigitalCamAccess_RL&hash=item3aa3c1f862

Admittedly they are dearer than most but it does say:-   This kit has default settings so can be installed without programming anything.

They have a dealer in town who obviously will fit them but I suspect it will be another £100 on top of this price and I would just as soon do it myself if I can.

I have tapped into the reverse loom on can bus cars and have had no issues so you should be fine. I think if you need to show any display on the oem headunit you will need the oem park sensor setup / module .

OK thanks for that.  I will buy one and have a go.  Not too fussed about anything on the screen and quite happy with the beeper.  Went to a certain supermarket yesterday and their bollards are invisible when you back up to them with an Octavia.  So time to spend yet more money on the car.

Andy thanks for that and also thanks to mobilone for a pm regarding this as he cannot reply because I have put it in the Freedom section.  I have asked the Mod team to move it to the general area.

Yes they are a tad expensive but then it links up with the Bolero so justifiably so.

mobilone was saying to be careful with supermarket bollards because they are not always picked up by the sensors.  Which sort of leads me towards a camera instead.  I have seen the arguments for not wanting to be looking at the screen for a camera and looking in your mirrors or over your shoulder and whilst I accept that to some extent their is little point in using your mirrors to look for something that is in the middle of your car and below the boot line thereby invisible.

Whatever I decide upon it is classed as a parking aide and that is exactly how it will be treated as an aide and not relied upon 100%.  As with Sat Nav I would only use it as a guide and not just trust it because as we know we can be sucked into a false security with these aides.

Once again thanks folks for the help.

Topic moved at the request of the OP.
