PCH...... the 'new' PCP?

Featured Replies

Will have to talk to VW in the next 9 months.

That is unless the new one is competitive to what we pay now on PCP or PCH.....

  • Ex-Skoda owner here, now lease a BMW (a cheap 2 year deal tempted me), starting to think about what to get next and likely to be a Skoda again if they keep up the kinds of PCH deals they've been doing

Personal leasing is definitely becoming a lot more popuplar, and awareness has been helped by some of the bargain deals there have been on Golf Rs and BMW 135Ms. As long as the monthly cost is lower

That's not bad at all - even if you do 30k miles over that's only £1080 in penalties.   With rates that low it makes sense to have a modest mileage on the contract and just put a bit extra aside eac

Not sure what happened there

Ran an 'RS through a week or so ago, TDI manual NOW comes with pratt nav, metallic WAS FREE OF CHARGE* and sunset (chargeable), 2 years with ~£2,000 deposit, from memory was a tad over £230 a month.

The tide is definitely turning on PCH.

Something that seems to be 'selling' this to some people is road tax, it's in essence free as it is a long term hire car. So if the dealer chappy is 'giving' you the road tax F.O.C for the 2 and/or 3rd/4th years, he's NOT   :D

* The 'deal' was completed before the end of March - I think (sometimes too hard) metallic is back to being chargeable.

I think it's being driven/engineered to be cheaper to avoid people jacking in their cars mid finance agreement.

Am I correct in thinking these special PCH currently available are limited to the diesels ? I don't see many good deals around for the petrols or am I just not looking hard enough ?

Good point that. It's easier to find £250 a month than ~£400 on a PCP.

As PCH is naturally intended for the business sector then yes, the better deals will be headed to the diesels. BUT I'd have a wager that if PCH starts to really pick up over the next few months/year then the pricing may well be better on the petrols.

1.4TSI manual came out +£25 month compared to 2.0TDI manual, it would have needed to be £20 month cheaper to offset the higher fuel spend.

Was more by competitively pricing PCH, they can lock people into a PCH and earn on the over mileage, and get less handed back which they'll make a loss on mid agreement.  Hang in for 3-4 years doing this and people will do away with PX and ownership which means no discounts, just a fixed monthly price.

That is the 1 thing that still stands out, charges at the end. Looking at some excess mileage charges they are not extortionate just depends how far over you go BUT damage charges are the factor, I feel. When is a chip NOT a chip but damage? A scratch, everyone expects the odd scratch but it is damage so where is the 'happy medium'?

It's going to be nigh on 2 years until we hear the stories though.

Can't knock it at all, but every pro will have a con.

I know that when I was involved in leasing vehicles some 20 years ago, they were very harsh on the difference between fair wear and tear and damage.

I recently rang skoda to see if I could hand my car back early. (Circumstances have changed) and I was told that I wasn't allowed to do this as I have to have paid half the value of the vehicle before I was eligible. This meant me paying around a £2000 short fall. This had nothing to do with mileage as I'm under my pcp target. Not impressed that even tho I'm on pcp I can't hand my car back until my term is up??

Sorry is it half the value of the entire car or just half the value of the agreement (PCP) ? Surely, the PCP is nearly over by the time you've paided half the value of the entire car.

It is half the amount financed plus interest. So on a PCP, that includes the residual value as you are financing that as well.

So 38 months into my 42 month agreement then !

Yep!

It works better with 5yr HP - which used to give about the same payments as a PCP but you had the option of just handing the car back somewhere about the 3 year mark.

So 38 months into my 42 month agreement then !

Yes, my 36 month PCP completes in August and I got past the 50% point in April.  You should be able to work out the point, more or less, by the fine print in your PCP agreement, which should tell you the amount you have to have paid to VT it, and how they reached that number.  It can depend how the dealer dealt with their discount; if they treated it as an additional deposit rather than a reduction in the list price of the car you can get a different number (I think - don't want to have to try to prove that!)
