Should I buy a new Superb II Diesel (Euro 5) now or wait for III (Euro 6)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am a newbabe to the fornum.

I am interested in buying a Superb Elegance 170bhps DSG Estate. I understand that the current out-going model (Superb II) is Euro 5 complaint. In view of the Boris's pending new ULEZ charge (possibly other cities as well) which only exempts Euro 6 diesel cars, I wonder if I should wait for a few months for the Superb III which is Euro 6 compliant or should I buy Superb II with 20% to 25% discount now?

Your views would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Gil

If it were me I'd go for the 'drive a hard bargain' on the outgoing model specced to oblivion. ;)

The money saved buying the old model will pay an awful lot of congestion charges... The problem is that by the time you know enough about the detailed spec on the new model you may not be able to order an old one any more.

Buying the first version of a newly released car also puts you in uncharted territory regarding weird quality control/reliability issues. Extra features also start showing up on newly released car models after a few months, so the early adopters often miss out there. The warranty will presumably be the same whichever you get, but the mechanics will b familiar with anything likely to happen a Superb II at this stage.

So the options really are to buy now and get a car you know at a healthy discount accepting that the discount will be needed to counter the depreciation it'll see compared to a new model, or buy in about 6-9 months time when the new model has been out long enough for people to know how it does in the real world.

Also the longer you plan to hold on the the car the less you'll want to deal with maintaining all the fancy emissions technology in the Euro 6 engines. It appears that most engine issues people have these days are the emissions systems failing rather than the fundamental systems engines have had all along. Euro 6 will be more of the same. I hear they're putting particulate filters on petrol engines too, so there may be no good option for short trips once these cars come out.

1. Save yourself a packet and get the current model soon, dealers with them in stock will be trying to shift them pretty quickly to make space for the mk3. The downside is do you want to be driving around in a new 'old' car, and then see the new model on the road a few weeks after you have just had your mk2.

2. The new model will be here fairly soon, if you can afford it and wait go for it, always nice to have the latest model on the road a soon as it comes out. Any teething troubles despite being a nuisance will be covered by warranty. Hopefully there won't be any problems and it will be OK.

Personally I'd wait for the new model, but I get a company car so it's not my money.

Many Thanks for the advise.

The discount of £7,700 (26.5%) from the RPP of £29,000 to £21,310 is very attractive indeed. I can see that some 1 year old second hand Superb Elegance with less than 10K miles on Autotrader are asking for around the same money. I guess that more or less covers the first year depreciation. I like diesel rather than petrol on the Superb. The chance of Boris  banning diesel cars in London all together or extending the zone to M25 is still quite low. I live in Greater London and go to Central London by trains during the weekdays.  I still have more than 4 and half years before Boris (most likely his successor) takes more dosh from me. I am not that model or badge conscious so driving an older Skoda model does not bother me. Also I take psycholist's point regarding issues relating to first release of latest model. The only concerns is the car not being EURO 6. That said, the saving from the discount would pay for at least 10 years of ULEZ charges (assuming £12.5 and not £100!) Alternatively, i can buy a second hand Fabia with petrol engine just for getting into London. The Superb II will be my very first Skoda. I just can't wait till September for the Superb III. I am looking forward to experiencing not stopping for petrol every 200 or 250 miles.

I personally would wait until SIII. 170HP/350 NM vs 190HP/400NM and some weight loss will make SIII more fun to drive. And they probably would re-program DSG for SIII, as new engine itself is more 'green' comparing to old 170HP version where they needed to put revolutions close to stalling in higher gears (1100 rpm@60 km/h 6 gear).

How often do you change your car?  If you change frequently i.e. every three years or so, you could still have the benefit of the discount now and have the new model in a few years (if you are bothered by seeing all the newer models on the road!).  As mentioned already, it will take about year or so before they properly tweak the new model anyway for bugs.  Yes the older model will be worth a bit less come in trade-in time however I think the increased depreciation as a result of having the older model will be much less than the savings you make now if you can get a 20-20% discount.

Many Thanks for the advise.

I am just looking to change onto a Superb estate TDI DSG +/- 4x4 either in Elegance or L&K. Where were you offered 26.5% off? I have seen some online traders that offer similar savings but not a dealer.

I faced the same question 6 weeks ago and ordered a Superb II 4x4 DSG Elegance estate on the basis that it was tried and tested and a good price as opposed to waiting for 9 months and full price. Car was delivered 2 weeks ago and going well. It has exceeded  my expectations.

Buy the existing model now. Let's face it as soon as you buy a Euro6 they will start working on Euro7. Don't chase rainbows, just buy now and enjoy.

My petrol Superb is nearly three years old and will be with me for the foreseeable future. I got a good deal when I bought mine and don't regret it one bit even though I knew the facelift model was around the corner.

Happy Skoding.

Thank You all for your kind messages! I think I will go for the existing model! As "The Zee" said, I will buy now and enjoy. I will let you know how I get on! I used to own Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Now I've decided not to touch them especially I cannot stand BMW and Audi drivers! I am looking forward to turning up to my shooting syndicate in the Superb in the coming season.

£7,700 is a Superb discount gwu - sorry, couldn't help it. Just plumped for the model II estate and thoroughly impressed, and should be around long enough to get the model III when it's switched up :)

Just would like to give you an update. I bought the Superb Mark II and love it. Have done 4000 miles already.

I went for the DSG 170 elegance estate in May as they were offering good contract hire rates. More than happy with the car and by the time I'm ready for a new one the teething problems on the 3 will be well sorted

We bought ours in March this year and had been looking at an estate.  But for us it would have been a very high mileage car for the price we wanted to pay.  My better half did not want a high mileage car.  So our dealer showed us a Superb II Twindoor and when we took it for a test drive we weren't disappointed.  We keeping getting comments about how good it looks and the rear seat space in the back.

The difference in performance from our previous Avensis is night and day.  It pulls our caravan so much better and is very quiet.

We love our Superb.

I'd never buy the first run of any new model, wait six months and let other people deal with the faults :-)

Been driving my Superb II (170bhp DSG diesel) for 4 months. Really love it. After driving a Land Rover Defender 90 for almost 2000 miles from Gibraltar through Spain and France to London in the last two weeks, it was such a pleasure to get back in my Skoda Superb again! That said, I can see why people, especially men, like the Defender; it is a toy! Even you get over taken by some caravans on the motorways.

With the current news about VW, I wonder how it affects Skoda and how many Superb III diesel would be sold? Regardless, I still like my diesel Superb and will keep driving one until the day they stop selling diesel.
