I'm considering one of these - classier than a Fiesta ST (I might still go with the ST as they're available considerably cheaper than the Polo - the interior of the Fiesta is a bit cluttered and I find sitting in a Fiesta slightly claustrophobic).

Surprisingly on Drive The Deal a standard 3dr Polo GTi Manual is cheaper than a standard ST3 by over £500 after all manufacturer/dealer discounts are applied!

I agree about the interior. Ford have been terrible with the dashboard design since the MK1 Focus, but seem to be toning it down slowly with the latest Focus and Mondeo.

I have owned a ST2 and unfortunately it was a bad egg and had to sell back to the dealer after six months. Fantastic handling and ride/damping when "on it" but the town ride <30 MPH is akin to a horse drawn carriage.  To be fair though my dads B-Max has very firm damping around town too.(I believe the ST has a uprated version of the B-Max rear suspension?)

There are a few 'used' examples available at dealers. I was having a butcher's earlier today - the more I look into it, the more I think this ticks the right boxes for me -

1) The exterior isn't 'in yer face'.

2) Compact.

3) Classy interior.

4) Straightforward 1.8 turbo (well, hopefully anyway...).

5) Can't imagine it'll be a big seller, so unlike the Fiesta ST it won't be a case of everyone and their auntie having one.

TBH I should just look to buy a 1.2TSi 105 (as I only do 4,000 a year) but I know if I did I'd have a gnawing feeling I should have splashed the extra cash - I don't really need a car (I get the train to work and Sainsbury's is walking distance) but it's a handy thing to have.

Best go road test one or 2 and see if you like a Polo and it is worth spending something like £12-13,000 or so on at present.

Your car must be good for another 3 years without costing much.

There will be loads of not too expensive 2015 Polo GTI available in a year or 2 i would think.

No doubt VW Main Dealers will get Demonstrators and they hardly look like being a big Sales success.

It will be like the Twincharger Polo GTI, VW needing to first register enough in the UK so as they do not look a total sales flop.

Food for thought, George. I'm not ruling out keeping the vRS but I'd want the peace of mind of some form of warranty - from memory I think Preston Motors said you can buy an annual warranty through a dealer up until the car is ten years old.

That would be my preferred option as I think then there would be some chance of at least having the dealer 'on side' - I might fire an email off to Henrys tomorrow. I don't have much faith in the warranties sold by Quintin Wilson and co. (perhaps unfairly).

I understand the peace of mind bit, but it is £2,500-£3,000 a year depreciation to get that with a New Polo GTI,

(worry of someone keying the new pride and joy.)

plus them taking your car now that really is at least worth £6,000,

but to you its more than that, and it only costs under £600 a year to keep going.

But if you really like them the VW's is maybe worth it.

?

Do you have a Blue Rinse now, or considering getting one?

Used DSG White 5000miles £17.995 in Carlisle.I was quoted £17.650 for same car 5door in White but new from car wow.

^^^^^^^

PX15 UVU,  5000 Miles, £17,440.

I wonder if you went tomorrow to buy this if they can sell you it before it is 3 months old or has 3,000 miles on it.  i doubt it.

This is quite possibly to get you along looking at ordering a New Factory Build.

:D

George, you have just totally put me off buying one. That and the fact they seem readily available in 'hairdresser white'.

Maybe we could go see together if we can get a good deal on 2, and trade both our cars in.

I imagine that others will see us as something a bit like this.

So, back to the drawing board. I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure.

I know certain folk on here love to pan the vRS, but I'm really struggling to come up with a replacement - something compact with a bit of zip that a bloke can drive (at a reasonable price). Women are spoilt for choice - Abarth, Cooper S, Polo etc..

I know this is going to sound rich coming from a vRS owner but I'm not convinced by Ford build quality - my old dear has a Fiesta of similar age and mileage to my vRS and the vRS has been far more reliable - the Bluetooth on the Fiesta packed in, both front springs went (not at the same time!), there was an issue with the tailgate lock and the suspension squeaks over every bump.

My suggestion.

Go to a Renault Dealership and try a Clio RS 200 1.6T, and book a test in the new Trophy 220.

Great cars.

after you will see how the vRS does all the same as it without spending lots of money.

Alfa Romeo Mito 'QV 172 ps' is nice i think other than the looks.

Latest one with near the same go as a vRS Twincharger, TCT Gearbox, DNA  and nice interior can be a bargain,

3 doors though.

Seat Leon FR 1.8 TSI DSG 182 ps, 3 or 5 Door or Estate is very nice IMO,

goes like a vRS and is more comfortable IMO.  & a Bargain.

I have tried all the other Autos.

My Favourite is actually a Beetle with DSG, Petrol, 210 PS.

But i will save getting one of them until i am more in touch with my feminine side,

or need to wear a Top Hat while driving.

If they did one with AWD in the UK right now i would just wear a dress and buy one.

The simple solution would be for Skoda to do the decent thing and stick a 1.8T in the III ;).

Sadly with the crazy prices that they have the New Estate at with the engines & DSG available now,

a Fabia 1.8TSI DSG would probably be as much as a New Seat Leon Cupra 280 or ST Cupra 280 DSG or the likes.

If the new Fabia can not get sales & the Polo GTI is a flop, who knows what might come within a year.

If Skoda is going Rallying with the Fabia R5 & it is getting all the publicity for Skoda,

they will look a bit daft with 110ps as the maximum output car in the Models available in the Showrooms.

Any bloke driving a Beetle, with a plastic flower, displayed on the dashboard, must be Hard - wouldn't mess with him and would agree with every word expounded.

Actually I don't think the Beetle 210ps is a bad call mate . At the right price of course.

RESPECT MAN! Innit!!

They are now 220ps, but i liked the last ones.

3 gauges on the Dash including a Turbo Boost and no daft 'Sport' or 'Turbo' decals.

(You can keep a Staffy in the rear when the seats are folded.)

Still not seen a demo car in my local showrooms.

What is considered to be the current spec'd delivery timescale used by dealers.

Has the demand been good , UK and  mainland Europe?

Has the demand been good

Unlikely - GTI or even sporty variants have never been big sellers in the Polo range (coming from somebody who had a 1.8 GTI).

Most people plump for a 1.2 SE jobbie.

in this week's Auto Express (the magazine, nothing showing on their website) they test the Polo GTi against a Mini Cooper S and (IIRC) pugeot 308 Gti

Polo comes in last....

I think if VW still did the Lupo GTI or made the effort to release an Up GT then the Mini and 308 would be up against stiffer competition i.e. because the Lupo/Up have more go-kart characteristics.

Generalising here, people who get a Polo GTI aren't necessary wanting to hare about everywhere on two wheels - they want a classy, high image, well screwed together warm hatch.

Luckily for them not many bought the VW Polo GTI Twincharger, because if they got a bad one, it was them that VW were screwing well.

But VW just discontinued them, kept first regestering a few in the UK,

and move on to the 2015 models.

Hoping as it is that very few Motoring Journalists will mention how VW built Lemons and treat the customers like dirt on their feet.

So Volkswagen & Audi hope the customers for the new GTI trust them to get it right this time, do not know how they act

with Warranty Claims where VW fail to admit they are at fault,

or do not care and just want a,

Classy, high image, well screwed together warm hatch.

So that will be a MINI they are buying / Leasing.

As to this Comparison.

Why not a 3 door vs 3door, or 5 vs 5 because the weights are very different.

a Manual Polo GTI has the Torque Quoted, a DSG one does not, it is 250 Nm same as the 1.4 TSI GTI was

so not 320 Nm.

Mini is 280 Nm, Manual & Auto.

So like for like testing of Manuals,  & Automatics (Automated Manuals) would be good.

A mention of what tyres are fitted, standard MINI are 195/ 55 R 16,   Polo 215/40 R17

Prices of Auto's as well would have been good.

Lupo GTi is my favourite car I have owned - kept its value fantastically as well - sort of wish I still had it :( but four years is more than enough in any car I suppose.

I see one almost every day when at home and it is a wonderful car,

and really should be replicated in some way by VW , Skoda, Seat or Audi,  but the price would be so high now it would make a S1 look cheap.

They might get someplace near with a Warm Version on the All New Fabia since that is the Body Shell that

Skoda decided to use as the R5 rally car.

Emotive as they say,

& with Genes from their most successful Rally car.

Has anybody else within Briskoda placed an order for the Polo GTI. It would be interesting to know take up /level of orders and delivery leadtimes being advised by dealers currently. Are there a delivery issue, spec, production demand?
