Using pre FL scout fogs as DRLs

Featured Replies

Please could someone confirm whether or not it's possible to use VCDS to set the front fogs on a pre face lift Scout to work as DRLs. I seem to recall a post on here about setting them to 50% intensity for such a function. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on the age of the car. I don't think it is possible on older cars which have the simpler CCM. You need a MY2008 car or later IIRC.

Thanks trundlenut, mine's a 58 plate so perhaps it would be possible.

I have 58 plate pre-facelift vRS, and I've set the fogs as DRLs at 50% in VCDS

You need to scroll through the central electroncs section and it gives you the option to set them as DRLs is one block, and the percentage intensity in the next block

Yes, as your is likely MY2009. VCDS will tell you.

Better still, set the fog's as DRL's and then swap them for the LED DRL's that were available as a cost option on the FL Scout (in lieu of front fogs)...

Does that lose tje foglights altogether though? If it does I can't see the point

If you still get both I can see the attraction

Good question.

I'm assuming if they are retrofitted to a Scout that already has front fog lights and coded as you have then they will...

1) Go out when side or dipped headlights are turned on.

2) Illuminate at full brightness when the front fog lights are turned on?

Do your fog lights still work as fog lights despite setting them to also operate as DRL's?

I'd imagine the LED DRL's won't be any good in the fog as they are completely different in terms of light out put, light colour and direction, not that I ever use my front fog lights, I'd happily sacrifice them for DRL's.

Yes fogs still work at 100% as foglights, so get best of both worlds

Thanks for the input guys. The LED option is an interesting avenue, though I have on occasion found the fogs useful in heavy snow, so not sure whether I'd want to dispense with them entirely. Food for thought though

Whereabouts are you? Nowhere near Lincoln probably, or I could have a go at setting it for you

I can't imagine LEDs working as foglights, so ideally one would want the LED lamps combined with the normal fog light lamps in the same unit and wired to allow both functions.   I'm guessing such a thing does not exist, either for the Scout or the other models?

No, it's either or I think - as I said personally I'd rather use the standard lights and keep the fog use if required, which I accept is relatively rare, but vital when it is, and the double benefit of reduced brightness DRLs

Yes in the lanes round me we can get some serious fog and I wouldnt be without proper fog lamps, albeit very occasionally. I have fitted separate DRLs in place of the grills next to the fog lamps but never been 100 per cent sold on the look of them, so this has got me interested...

Somebody has borrowed my VCDS lead otherwise I could tell you definitely where it shows up in the long coding helper in central electronics

These are available but look a bit 'Halfords' for me.

Traditional halogen fog light in the middle and an LED outer ring to perform the role of DRL's...

Yes, agree. I'll stick with original fogs just now and perhaps see about a bit of re-coding if I can get near to someone with VCDS. Thanks for highlighting, though.

Sarge, I saw this thread and thought it would be worth a stab to see if I could turn on the front fogs as DRL's on my Scout without VCDS.

I got close but no banana! I could get front fogs on but only with sidelights (front and back) which I didn't want.

I could also set dipped headlights as DRL's but again not for me.

So I'd stick with finding someone with VCDS...

Thanks for that update. How did you set the dipped headlights as DRLs? I might try that as a short term measure. Presumably it only works for front lights and doesn't give anything at the back? I have the vRS set to 'Scandinavian' so I get the front LEDs and the rear side lights.

It is all in the Carista App, download the free App to your phone, buy the Bluetooth dongle for the cars OBDII (£5 on eBay) and you can then read fault codes and change some fairly basic functions. Pay an extra £15.90 and several slightly more advanced options become available, one of which is headlights as DRL's.

The reason I took the plunge was I saw in the thread linked above that one of the options on their car was to set the front fogs as DRL's. Unfortunately for me that was only possible if side lights (front and back) were on too.

Seems like VCDS still has it's uses!

Hey Brimma,

When you get your cable back do you think you could find the time to do this for us?

I'd be very grateful, I'm on the verge of investing in VCDS!

Cheers!

Happy to.........should hopefully be back by the weekend

Hi Sarge,

Did you make any progress with this?

I have VCDS on it's way to me so will be having a try next week.

My Scout is a little older than yours (2008) so not sure if I'll be able to do it.

As Brimma says I'll take a look in the Central Electronics long coding helper. I've never used VCDS before though so will be learning as I go!

Ok, what's the coding for this please?

I've got to replace the fog-lights on Destiny as previous owner managed to bounce the front left on something and break the fog's mounting.

Whilst I have an early '07 plate Scout, it's had the CECM replaced with a 3C8937049F, 30 Byte one :) :)

Silver1011, no, I'm afraid not. My leaky rear end has taken precedence! However still keen to see what can be done so will be interested to hear how you get on.
