Shock - French cars more reliable than German ones !

Featured Replies

The survey was carried out on 5 year old cars. Let's face it, most french cars are in the scrap heap by then anyway so long beyond warranty / reliability issues.

And it could also be that the survey addresses a different issue. That being the people most likely to take out an aftermarket warranty and claim for repairs are smart people who buy German...

Are you sure?  I thought it was the BMW 3 series.

Good to hear since I've just picked up my peugeot 3008 today.

In all fairness though, I've had 4 skodas and one VW along with mazda, nissan, fords, hyundai a, fiat and now on my 5th French car, they've all been as good as each other. French cars have all had better seats than the VAG ones but the VAG cars are put together more lagically ie it's much easier to change bulbs and take things apart/put back together.

In the UK we have the polarised view that Germans are efficient and produce the best stuff and the French are bicycle riding, onion selling, three hour lunch breaking petulent people.

Nice and simple paradigm but miles/kilometers from the truth. (French also make safe nuclear power stations powering Britain and HQ Airbus).

  • 2 months later...

French as good as the others in many areas....it's just a culture thing. Pick up a standard 'auto car' type magazine in France and Renault/Peugeot/Citroen will come out above Ford/Opel (Vauxhall) and so on. In the UK often the other way round.

Mercedes and BMW have had problems with diesel injection for many years. So have Renault. Many go pop at around 150,000 plus miles.

VAG make good cars but electrics can be shocking (windows, Central locking). BMW who seem to have lost the plot a bit (latest interior dashboard trims cheap and tacky IMO). Not yet seen a new Mercedes without an LED issue on its rear lights (especially rear brake - third brake - light).

Then you have those Korean brands Hyundai/Kia leading the way with crazy warranties and keen pricing....and I used to think that Japanese cars were the best until the recent Recalls (although Subaru do well).

Still, I posted elsewhere on here details about the last year of recalls in the motoring industry. Who had the most? Audi/BMW/Merc.....and the least amongst the mass produced cars. Skoda :)

Bottom line, buy what you like/can afford and enjoy it. All will have niggles/problems at some point. The days of the W124 model 'hewn from granite' Mercs are sadly gone in this cost cutting world of car manufacturing.

What-Car's recent survey.....

Overall, the most reliable models are the Honda Jazz and Mitsubishi Lancer, both of which also carry reasonable average repair costs. The least reliable model, the Audi RS6, is also the most costly to fix, with an eye-watering average repair bill of £1003.25.    Electrical faults are the most common across all cars, acting as the catalyst which sends almost a quarter (22.34%) of vehicles to the garage. Axle and suspension faults are also common, affecting 22% of cars. Air conditioning is the cause of least concern to motorists, being reported by a minimal 3% of owners.

The full results were as follows:

1 Honda,    2 Suzuki,   3 Toyota,    4= Chevrolet,   4= Mazda

6 Ford,  7 Lexus, 8 Skoda, 9= Hyundai,  9= Nissan, 9= Subaru

12= Daewoo,  12= Peugeot,   14 Fiat,  15 Citroen

16 Smart,   17 Mitsubishi,  18 Kia,  19 Vauxhall,   20 Seat

21 Renault,  22 Mini,  23 Volkswagen,  24 Rover,  25 Volvo

26 Saab,  27 Land Rover,  28= BMW,  28= MG,   30 Jaguar

31 SsangYong,  32 Mercedes-Benz,  33 Chrysler,    34 Audi,   35 Jeep

36 Porsche,  37 Bentley

A very odd result and shows surveys need looked at with a pinch of salt.

As an example look at how many Toyota iQ petrol 1.0 & 1.3 Manual & CVT were actually build and then sold in Europe.

Euro 4 until late 2010, then Euro 5 engines late 2010 on.

Failures with the EGR Valve and Toyota dragging heels in accepting this, and the cost to owners.

Failures with Steering and Brakes before the recalls were put in place and still after this.

If they are up there as the most reliable, then there is little hope with many down the list.

Strange that the Rapid is the most reliable Skoda; I frequent the Rapid forums here where build quality complaints have been endemic since it's introduction.

This thread being in the Motor Racing section though, I thought it was about Renault F1 being more reliable than Mercedes F1, Or Peugeot v's Audi in the WEC a while back.

Well I've a new i10 and it's bloody amaze balls, the 1.2 kappa engine is frugal and quite responsive and most of all customer services are spot on unlike ze Germans

Just like Peter Picanto was for me, which is why the Kia Picanto is often at the top of Used Car Surveys on Reliability,

but obviously they are not 100% all OK, or they would be just perfect.

How some of the others get to the top of lists amaze many,

but then there are the likes of the German Auto Club that were caught making sure VW got results that were achieved by false respondents.

Vorsprung Durch Technik. If only everything was as reliable in life as spin and media had you believe.

EDIT.

Sorry my bad, the cheating and lies were not on reliability, just on numbers,

but then it just goes to show how they can try it on.

No the Koreans arnt perfect I'm having the wiper arms replaced due to rusting which apparently is a issue but as far as the frenchies go they are far better than they used to be, let's remember how skodas used to be slandered in the past as rubbish !

Skoda were always pretty good mechanically, not so good electrically as they could not access high quality electrical components before the curtain came down.

Daewoo (Chevy) Spark is pretty good too IMO.

Well done to Lada (Renault) and Huff for getting a second in the World Touring Car race on the weekend !

Which kind of proves your point.  The Citroens and the Ladas are both French (Ladas race cars designed and built by ORECA in France - nothing to do with Russia at all)

A bit late getting the Renault F1 engine reliable and still not up to a reasonable amount of power and I wonder how quick Ghosn's promise will materialise.

Be interesting to see how the Nissan GTR racer goes at Le Mans.

Vw will probably power the red bulls or vag racing fi 1 team, Renault didn't /has not got a grip on the small turbo charged unit in the racers , how the mighty have fallen, I'm going to be test driving the veloster today 1.6 gdi turbo engine and the Santa Fe

In laws have a new A3 2.0tdi and a new Renault Clio 1.0.

They've had more problems with the Audi than the Renault. they also speak more highly of the Renault than the Audi but I think that's due to expectation / value for money.

They expected the Audi to be good, while they're surprised how good the Renault is.

Their previous A3 also had a quite a few issues inc injector issues when they traded in. I was surprised they went for another.

My inlaws similarly bought a W211 Merc, even though their W210 E-class had been both unreliable and rusty.

For her it was all about the prestige of a 2 year old Merc rather than his sensible Kia (with 7 year warranty) choice.

Since she penny-pinches obsessively, I don't know how the constant repair bills go down. Oh well.

At 2 years old you would want the Original Manufacturers Warranty to cover things, & the Paint & Panel/ Corrosion Warranty as long as they go,

then a Extended Warranty would be a wise buy to cover Major Repair Costs.

So all in you can have as much cover as you get with a Kia / Hyundai really,

Prestige cars cost more and might cost more in Servicing or Maintenance,  and used Prestige cars can be a liability when bought as used

due to poor or penny pinching Service and Maintenance while under Lease or Service Plans and drivers that know they only have the car for 2 or 3 years and they get handed back to the Dealer.

The amount of under 12 month old Prestige cars driving the UK Roads with faulty lights still amazes me and yet i see it daily and have been doing for the past decade.

New Unregistered cars on Trade Plates being delivered even have faulty lights often,

and these are usually German Manufacturers Vehicles.

Audi being the most obviously with faulty rear lights.

To be fair, given the choice between a new Renault engine and a new VAG engine, I'd go with the Renault. They actually build engines really well, just a shame about the rest of the car.
