vRS + Steel Wheels

Featured Replies

There is some discussion on uk-mkivs.net (my old home) at the moment with a few people fitting steel wheels for the winter. Personally I think it looks very cool and I have always been a fan of black/dark wheels.

Anyway, here's a quick Photoshop of my Furby, lowered, with a set of steelies.

What do you think?

Are you joking?? :P To me, it looks like someones nicked all the hub caps!!

Looks like someone needs some Makro

It's the 16" wheel trim issue that stops me getting a set of 16" steelies to replace the 14" steelies on my comfort combi.

Mondeos do 16" hub caps.

A Ford Fabia

Volkswagen Boras came with 16 inch steelies, so you should have a ready supply of wheels and trims (though you'll need different tyres for the Furby of course).

Try adding a tint to the windows, to be even more radical spray it Matt black

what size steelies are octys or superbs.... they'll have hub caps.

It looks like a Vauxhall Corsa thats lost its wheel trims!!

What do you need winter tyres for in East Anglia !!!???? Are there more hills than Ive seen there?

I think steels might be less safe than alloys in winter - I'd rather have a 205 wide tyre in contact with the ground than a 185 one as what usually wraps narrow steelies. :) And I'd rather have a grippy aggressive tread pattern than a typical "eco-contact" type tyre like the conti's I used to use. :)

Thinner is better on snow.

:D I'll go to work on my mountain bike then :D

I just thought more rubber on tarmac = safer. Anyway, with 16" steels I don't see why you couldn't use 205/45 R16s and have the same tyres. :)

But you will save a lot of weight! unsprung weight means more BHP per ton! I would guestimate it'll be a fair bit quicker with those wheels on as opposed to the standard vRS ones!

my octy ambiente came with 15" steelies.... which are now sat in my shed ;) complete with trims!

I used to have steelies as winter wheels on my Corrado & Ibiza. They were silver 15" steelies with slighty small footprint & higher profile tyres than standard.

Jon, did u have full winter tyres for these wheels?

Erm......

No. Steel is heavier than alloy.

Was going to put some Colway winter tyres on, but couldn't get hold of any for at least a month!

So put some 185/55 15 Toyo T1-S tyres on, in end. Worked well in the snow.

Damn right it is!

The 15" steelies weighed a ton! (not literally, of course):D

Surely that depends on the alloy used? And in the case of wheels (rather than per-volume), also quite dependent on the construction? :)

Rob.

Sorry my mistake, I thought it was a direct comparison between 16" steel wheels for the Fabia, and 16" alloys for the Fabia.

Just off to split some hairs....brb

:D
