Bolero undocumented feature

Featured Replies

I say it's undocumented but what I mean is that I can't find it in the Bolero manual...

One difficulty with navigating hundreds of folders of music, which I have on an SD card that lives in my car, is accurately selecting folders and tracks using the touch screen while the car is moving.  Whilst driving it's really difficult and probably not very safe but even my wife attempting to do this from the passenger seat often touches the wrong item because general car movement makes it difficult to point reliably at the item you want.

Completely by accident the other day I found that you can also navigate up and down these lists (of folders or tracks) using the radio tuning knob and you can select from the lists by pressing this knob.  You can also select and press the Play button that shows just above the list in the same way.

I find it useful - especially on bumpy roads.

I agree that it's a very nice feature to make touch screens a little more bearable in cars. (As I have said on here before I absolutely hate the damn things and consider them a real danger on the road as they take way too much attention off our hands for such a simple thing as changing folders, radio stations, etc.)

On the other hand I have to give a big thumbs up to my dealer then, as he showed me that hidden feature when I picked upt the car.

You can also swipe the screen to change tracks.

Yes - I agree - I really don't think the ergonomics of touch screens are right for a car.  In a car, as many controls as possible should be able to be operated without having to look at them more than momentarily, if at all.  But you can't use a touch screen - even for the simplest tasks - without looking at it for some time to see what you're touching.

Can't comment on the Bolero manual, but it's on page 7 of the Columbus manual.

Touch screens can work provided that they are positioned so you don't have to reach and that buttons stay at the exact same positions so you can rely on muscle memory instead of vision.

These however don't really come true on the Octy. The screen is a little too far away from the driver and some "buttons" seem to switch places in different modes. (The "button" for muting parking sensor audio for example.)

Ah yes - I've found it now on page 8 of the Bolero manual, where I found the following:

Selecting menu/menu item

  • Drag your finger over the screen in the required direction
  • Turn the menu knob 2 » Fig. 1 on page 5

If you make the selection by turning the menu knob 2 , the currently selected

menu is highlighted in green.

Confirming menu/menu item

  • Touch the function key with your finger
  • Press the menu knob 2
