Broadband and download limits, do they charge?

Featured Replies

My brother has just had Virgin Broadband installed, its 2 meg. With a 20 gig download limit which he shares with 4 other people in his house so basically they have 5 gig each.

Do ISP's actually have the technology to charge? Whats the best way for him to monitor what people have used?

Depends on the ISP and how the connection is configured. If its done through a router then monitoring will be difficult, however if they are using ICS several download monitors are available for free that should help. There may even be one buried away on the virgin website.

The technology does exist, and when you reach your 20GB what happens next depends on the ISP, either your connection will stop working completely, will carry on and you get a nice letter in the post inviting you to revise your habbits or, the connection could be throttled to a much slower speed.

I have Telewest Blueyonder cable broadband, currently running at 2.5 meg download with no download limits, and soon to be upped to 10 meg download with no limits.

he went with virgin as he only has to give 1 months notice if he wants to cancel.

I was speaking to Plusnet about this today as I have found the wonders of Bit Torrent ;) The premier package on Plusnet gives you 30gb peak (4pm - Midnight) download and 100gb off peak (All other times), if you exceed this limit you get an email to warn you that you have exceeded the limit and to revise your connection package.

Andy, I've heard that NTL will be capping the 10MB service. Not sure if it will be the same for Telewest considering NTL have bought out telewest or is it the other way around

I think they should be re-baptised Enteewest or Tellyell :P

Bet that was pleasant for you  I binned them off and went to Zen and have no caps or anything now and it is bliss. Sorry to hijack the thread slightly

NTL are currently quoting a 3GB monthly download limit for 1Mb Broadband, and 30GB for 2 and 3 Mb Broadband. That is news to me as a longstanding Broadband customer of theirs. :(

oops

I am with NTL and have the 2mb download and never had a problem yet with exceeding 3GB in 1 month, mind you i've been with NTL broadband since it first started as 250kb and been upgraded (with no extra cost) since

never had a problem yet with exceeding 3GB in 1 month

how do you do this???? I had almost reached 20Gig in no time at all

I'm currently hitting 350GB per month so if they're doing as Denis noticed they mention on their website

NTL are currently quoting a 3GB monthly download limit for 1Mb Broadband, and 30GB for 2 and 3 Mb Broadband
then I suppose I won't have anything to worry about with a 10Mb connection either ;):)

as stated before ntl can not yet monitor your usage, ive just had a word with one of the guys on the reporting project for this and it wont be happening for the forseable future, mid to end of next year was mentioned. Once it does happen ntl will be reviewing the limits and they will increase.
