1.6 TDI CR Elegance... Short commutes to work, am I buying the wrong engine?

Thanks guys, all of the above since my previous post is reassuriing to know!!  I might just leave in sport mode all the time, might help a bit.  I'll be keeping an eye on it, that's for sure!!!

I did read quite a few threads last night about DPF and they left me a bit warey to say the least, but all of the threads I read were related to older models (mkII) where the DPF was further way from the engine block.  I read about a whole fleet of taxi drivers that had moved away from the Octavia because they all had issues with DPF, but I couldn't find any threads that mentioned issues with the Mk III diesels having issues.

On paper, the 1.6 TDI CR engine looks to be a wee bit more powerfull and a wee bit more torquey than the 1.9 TDI engine in my Fabia Estate, so If I get the same sort of performance out the Octy that i get from the Fabia, I'll be happy enough.

The 1.4 TSI engine is a belter I'm sure, but the extra cost of insurance over the diesel, and the band D road tax made me think again, though it would have been nice to get away from the noise of the rattly diesels  LOL!!

@airscool,  Are you really only paying £150 insurance for your 1.6 TDI elegance?  My quote is more like £440 a year!!  Paid £325 for the Fabia in January, Quoted £87 to change to the Octy till the renewal is due again next January.  and I'll be 40 later this year, with full NCB.  I have a BMW 325 Ti Compact Sport as well, and Insurance on that is like £250 a year, but it's 52 plate so......... (same insurance company too!!)

I used to worry a bit about it when I first bought the car, but because it was new the regenerations were more common. Now the car is older the frequency of them is less and I don't give the dpf a second thought. Yours is second hand by the looks of it with miles on the clock so you shouldn't experience too many obvious regenerations ( the ones that you interrupt when you switch off that is - fan run on......). I do a load of short journeys and so do the taxis and most of them are Octavia diesels.

I had a tsi for a few weeks at the end of last year, and frankly I much prefer the drive and sound of a diesel. Those petrol engines are just unnaturally quiet these days, whereas the modern diesels now sound more like a proper car should do!

Really ?

I went for a run with a group of friends to another friends home last night, 50 miles each way, mostly motorway, some A roads.  We were in a Nissan Qashqui, 1.5 TDI and I have to say, I was very, very impressed by how quite and refined  it was, and how much power it had.  The driver is an ex rally car driver and we might have been 5 up, but he was giving it some beans, and the 1.5 TDI engine rev'd very sweetly and smoothly.

I'm not into the big, 4 x 4 look of the Qashqui, but I wish the diesel engine in the Octavia was as smooth and quiet.  It's quite a revelation, for a diesel.

We have a multicar policy with Admiral. So the Octy Estate 1.6TDi (which was new) and an 07 Polo 1.4 Petrol - I'm 40 something and SWMBO 30 something using nine years and seven years NCB repectively and on each car repectively.

Just checked it is £252 pa for both vehicles including business use.

I know that you have already ordered, just wanted to point out that in Germany, a car dealer will really try and talk you out of purchasing a diesel if the majority of your journeys are sgort & start stop in nature.

if i were you, I would have gone for the 1.4TSi as my neighbour has one in his Mk7 golf and loves it. I have a 2.0tdi VRS and often have had to take it for a blast during the winter as the DPF does not like the cold ambieny temps combined with SWMBO's short journeys.

I would say that at least the regens have dropped right off as the mileage has risen. I hope the 1.6 makes you happy, i still worry about my DPF but shouldnt really matter anymore.

Airscool,  That's incredible!! Thanks for the information!!  I've got over ten years full NCB, both my cars are insured through Bell Direct, and have been for at least 7 or 8 years.  Bell don't have a multi car policy scheme.

I'm going to go look at Admiral's multi car policy and try and find out what other companies can provide a multi car policy.  I'm sure there must be some savings out there, it's clear to me now that I'm paying over the odds.

Let us know how you get on. Maybe it has something to do with the Octavia being brand new? Whatever, I was pretty bowled over when SWMBO said she'd sorted out the car insurance. She certainly had!

P.S. We started with a single policy on the Polo when it came up for renewal then added the Octavia on when it arrived.

I tried to get a quote on-line earlier today, but the multi-car application form on Admiral's web site seems to be broken as it would not accept any date I tried to enter when asked when I'd like the policy to start from.  That was very near the end of the form. Most frustrating!! Tried a few times, but got stuck at the same date issue both times.  I may have another go at it later this evening, or give them a call from work tomorrow.

P.S. I had to look up SWMBO to find out what that meant.  LOL!!  I'd have to say that SWMBO must drive not only drive a Polo and Octavia, but a hard bargain too!!

Ha yes this is true! She had to telephone to get it all sorted. This was last April though so maybe they have tried to get the multicar system online since then.

I've not had time to phone Admiral yet,  (Web site still not working properly) But I did get a rough muti car quote from Aviva and that came out a £493 with all the extra cover and a £150 excess that I wanted, so it sure looks like I can save a few £200 by going with a muti car policy.   I'll call Admiral when I get a chance.

Thanks again for the info airscool!!
