Throttle body problem

Featured Replies

Rather than post a large image here, i have uploaded it here

I have a fabia 2004, 1.4 petrol that is giving me some issues.

Sometimes when i accelerate i cant seem to get any power, it feels like a flat spot, and takes a while to build up momentum.

I have taken it to the local garage, and they seem to thik that the throttle body is causing the problem. When the car was running, the butterfly flap had issues opening after a while, and i asked him whether cleaning the throttle body was an option. He told me that because the throttle body was controlled elctrically, it would need replacing.

Now i have 2 options:

  • Buy a 2nd hand part
  • Buy a new one for £160ish

Before i plunk the money down, i thought i'd ask here for help on what i should do. I am useless at doing anything with cars and have no experience, so any suggestions of getting down and dirty with some tools will not help.

Thank you.

I can confirm that the picture you have uploaded is indeed a throttle body.

Do you have the engine check light on?

Is your engine a 1.4 16v?

Yes to both

Ok, where are you located because we're going to need some fault codes to help you progress this.

It may indeed be the throttle body, but I seriously doubt it.

Oldham, Manchester.

I have a bluetooth OBD-II that plugs into the slot, and an app on my phone to connect to it, can i use that to bring up the fault codes?

Try it and see.

Hopefully this help,.

Some quick googling led me to this for the P0118, seems a fix for that one

Yes, get a new ECT sensor, cheap and an easy fix.

The other code could well be dodgy wiring to the throttle body, judging by the state of your loom someones had a go at it before, suggest an auto electrician if you're out of your depth.

This looks like the right ECT sensor.

You lost me at loom :) but i'll do some research before i get the electrcian involved.

Thank you very much for your help. i wll update when i fix or have these 2 issues fixed. opefully that should solve the problem.

If your ECT is a 2-pin type then yes.

Long delayed update...

Cars has been running okay at best but haven't had the time to get it fixed. But did manage to replace the ECT sensor and that problem has disappeared although the Engine light still on and 2 current codes:

- P2101 - same as before

- P0402 - hey a new one! This seems to indicate a problem with the EGR valve, but i have had it changed once already.

Anyone have possible suggestions?

Maybe use the "search" function for EGR valve issues, I've cleaned the point on/near the TB that gets bunged up with gunge.

You need to thoroughly clean out the EGR pipe and inlet plenum, they're gunged up.

I'll give that a go..

thanks

Any ideas what i could do about the P2101 error?

This:

Seen an auto electrician who diagnosed that the wiring from the loom to the edu was fine and the problem was with the throttle body.

yay....

Now i need to find a replacement throttle body.

Since the engine is the 1.4 16v, is it the 75hp model?

Buy used or buy new?

thanks for any and all help

Get a used one, I think all the 16v Fabias are 100hp because the lower powered option is the Skoda 1.4 8v engine rather than the Polo which uses the 75hp VW 16v engine, therefore most VW/Skoda/Seat 1.4 16v throttle bodies from vehicles of that age should be a straight swap.

Halp, your car appears to have a 100bhp engine, either AUB or BBZ code. I surmise this because your throttle body has the part number 036133062M on the side of it.

The 75bhp engines (AUA/BBY codes)have a different part number TB fitted, namely 036133062L. Maybe a slightly smaller dia.?

Make sure you get one that has the same 036133062M part number as your current one, and all should be well.  They're usually very reliable, I believe, so secondhand should be a safe bet.

It'll be a BBZ since it's 2004, the TB's from VW/Seat will have a different part letter suffix although they should be the same part, the numerical code is the same after all, it's possible that the VW or Seat cars use Bosch or Siemens PCM whereas the Fabia uses a Marelli.

Nope. Same part number exactly.

Result, there must be thousands to choose from secondhand then.

Wow,

Thank you all,  looking at used currently and thankfully posted here before making a purchase.

Re erg valve, once cleaned, do you think blanking it would be a good idea?

Man, I have AA BRC and would love them to pay for fixing it but goddamn the car is basically bullet proof

Here you go:

Cheap as chips and guaranteed.

Blanking the EGR valve is quite literally the worst idea imaginable for a modern petrol engine unless you're tuning the hell out of it and using a standalone ECU. Clean everything EGR related then put it all back together, it should as good as new with a replacement TB on it. Check all your vacuum lines while you're at it, the brake servo pipe is renowned for splitting at joints.

Yup.

Hey, Halp, can you hang onto the TB you take off, I might be interested in doing an autopsy.  PM me once you've fixed your problems to discuss, please.

Yeah, it's not like I'm going to be using it anyway.
