Am I crazy or is 35 mpg in a pd170 cr@p

Featured Replies

Doesn't sound THAT bad. Best to try the fill, reset, fill, calculate technique to see what it is doing on paper rather than on computer. Even if you do full down to half a tank and back up again, at least you will get an idea.

Do a pump to pump check and compare with Fuelly, then report back.

If it's not the computer, I'd look at sensors but do that first.

Pump check? Tell me more.... VCDS?

You must have used half a tank by now to be able do a manual calculation, it's been three days  :D

Why don't you use Fuelly?

That gives a pretty accurate reading but only on a tank to tank basis rather than a one off journey.

I loaded my last fill up onto fuelly earlier. My gauge is saying I have used 1/4 of a tank, so I may well top up on the way home tonight.

Since the de-DPF operation, the car doesnt smoke, but it does smell a bit like a bus now when i get out the car. I do suspect it is just something not calibrated right to be honest after all the work the car has had. Mayeb the timing is out, but on the PD170, I am not sure how to check. On the normal PD lumps its easy, but not the twin cam ones?

Ok, I have topped up and entered the figures into Fuelly (bee my signature) and it seems my fears are not so bad.

Anyone have any idea how to alter the maths on Maxidot to get the MPg to read something close to what it is? I have NEVER had it read 46MPG!!!!!

I'm not sure you'll be able to correct that level of inaccuracy using the correction channel as it has a min/max correction percentage.

If I remember correctly from what I did mine it is:

( displayed MPG / actual MPG ) * 100 = correction figure

VCDS:

17 - Instruments - Adaption-10 - Ch No. 3

I don't think this effects stored data, only new data so you will probably need to clear the current data too.

Thanks Langers, I will take a look

It will smell a bit different especially when cold, that comes with the lack of dpf

Right amended, I will see how it is fairing later, you can only go 15% each way though, which is a bugger, but hey ho.

VCDS showed it as current displayed correction * calculated MPG / current displayed MPG  = new correction figure which for me was 131, so I set it to 115 from 100...

Actually Langers you were right, 115 dropped the MPG, 85 raised it. So all is good, well, better.

The car is also feeling a lot better now after a little hard driving, its almost like everythign is loosening up a bit. I still want a Rolling Road, and I believe the one in Colchetser closed down recently! Anyone know of a rolling road near Colchester?

I have spotted an overriding moral to this thread -  Never Trust Maxidot MPG figures

Now you have done a real world calculation, of fill to fill  & miles traveled  I bet you are  :whew:  that the maxidot readings were so wildly out.

I am a bit, I have had a Fuelly account for yonks TBH, I just never used it. I have it on my phone now so every time i fillup I will update it!

Now I have to fugure out whether my EGR requested and actual figures shoul dbe changing when it shoul dbe mapped out... though duty cycle says 0.0%...

I have a PD 140 and before my remap and fitted with standard rims I was getting 52mpg and 480-520 miles a tank (Fill up to red light). Now I average 440-460 a tank which is roughly 45-46mpg. It has no DPF as standard and has wider 18"s than the standard 17" Pegasus alloys. My foot is not heavy so I believe my mpg is slightly lower than it should be.

Thats a good benchmark, seems we are similar then, although the remap alledgedly takes mine to 240... questionable but aparrently the DPF takes about 20BHP off, so 170 +20 = 190 * 1.25 = 237 so maybe.

My 46 was a semi decent run and me being careful, so I suspect 40-45 will be my normal average. I sit in traffic and when im not I usually have the pedal to the metal so to speak.

Heavy foot syndrome is your issue then lol. I'd call myself a spirited driver not a racer, I like some fun but when safe to do so. Mine is about 185 now which is plenty to be honest. How did u get 240 out of The 170, u must have more than a map? I also have a Seat Altea XL CR 170 but it's standard because the wife uses it.

No, just a DPF and EGR delete which adds about 20BHP, then the Stage 1 which is usually about 20-25%. Quantum said it was 240, I was expecting about 210, so I want to go find a rolling road to test it.

Hi

have you had your front cam position checked on VCDS? Mine was very slightly out

Unless you are giving it a lot of shorter journeys that sounds a bit low

I changed the fuel filter, and all filters, and oil twice now

Initially I was getting 500 miles to tank motorway and a bit of town

I had the work done with DPF removed, EGR off, and mapped, and front cam torsion value set to 0.0

I have had 4 wheel hunter alignment done

Tyres are all at about 33-34psi

The Car gave me 580 miles recently on 57 litres brimmed tank which is 46+ mpg

I have got 620 miles recently which is just under 50mpg

Currently as of now the car is showing 640-650 miles, that was a lot of motorway, in total which is just under 52mpg

These are all calculated on app/web not on the cars dash mpg display, that actually under reads a little

Oh and I drive at 65mph on motorway most of the time

The later CR engine is meant to be slightly better on fuel as we know, but it depends on driving style etc

Superb thanks Turkeythighs. My Torsion value is 0.35 so I can get that changed, I wanted the hunter alignment done anyway, so I will get that booked in. I do usually have my tyres hard, but I will check them all the same.

I must admit, I was under the bonnet this weekend end noticed 75% of the plugs on the top of the engine were not clicked together, so this might not be helping if some connections are a dodgy.

The car is a little laggy as low revs but I think that is the eco part of the remap, low revs running lean etc, but I am still not 100% convinced the EGR was mapped out properly so it could be that I guess. But sometimes it goes like hell, I guess i floor it at the right moment on the curve. I might just go back and say sod the eco bit, put the proper stage 1 map on it.

Hey

That is weird about the plugs?

Did you get a dyno plot printout on the remap? good guide for seeing the approx torque curve

Do you have any leaks of boost anywhere? a smoke test will show this up in 5 minutes

Also its easy for the EGR connection near the inlet manifold/anti shudder valve (ASV) to sometimes leak

I checked mine a few days ago and it was seeping air as it had a blanking plate added

I tested with a fairy liquid solution making tiny bubbles now sorted with cleaning and small amount of hi temp sealant

If you were based fairly close I would help you out no problem

Interesting on torsion values on the PD engine

EGR Plate ordered, and i work with sealants at work and make gaskets etc, so thats not a problem.

Interesting read on the timing, I will have to check l/h figures out. for the rear cam. Though tickover is silky smooth.

Hopefully this will sort the lag out. I found a good EGR delete kit from europe that works out as £38 delivered, its slightly more agricultural than the fancy ones but looks identical.

The rear exhaust cam has no setting in VCDS so harder to get right, it at all. I had mine on a dyno at the time so the tuning company was adjusting it on the go, then trying again etc etc

Can you show me this EGR kit delete? and does it keep the anti shudder device ?

Cheers
