Tyre blown out coz of shoddy suspension set up?

Featured Replies

Just been to have two new tyres put on the car.. They then told me that 'whoever put my lowering springs on set the car up totally wrong'. So been onto skoda uk and they have said I need to pick the tyres back up, I've done just over 8 thousand miles (driving conservatively) not wheel spinning or cornering like an F1 driver. And the wheel had apparently gone through 4 layers because they were set up so wrong, and the car would have apparently handled awfully because when it was set up it was not set up properly.... Skoda uk now want the tyres as only the inner side of the front tyres is totally worn.. To where there is absolutely nothing left (the outside looks fine hence why I haven't changed them before hand) but the noise on my steering wheel has now stopped and going to get the tyres and send pictures to skoda uk to see what they say. Has anyone any advice at all? I thought i was doing the right thing by taking them to a skoda garage having them done, and now I've just been told my two front tyres were shredded because they were set up completely wrong..... Will post any updates here but would be keen to know if anyone else has had the problem, skoda also want it putting on there ramps this afternoon to ''check if it's okay' which I have no problem at all with.... I will lastly say I am not putting any blame on any skoda garage and am only going on what I have been told by a reputable tyre fitter....will upload pics of wheels after I get them back...

Well if the car came supplied from factory with them the wheel alignment should have been set by them and any tyre dealer who fits new tyres most likely at additional cost to car owner. I get my 4 wheel alignment and all 4 wheel balanced when my car is serviced and when I'm changing tyres

How do you put them on wrong? They are dealer fit not Skoda factory?

How do you put them on wrong? That are dealer fit not Skoda factory?

my lowering springs where speced on my car from new factory fit

Really, but they were fitted at the PDI, Were they not.?

It makes sense; after changing the ride height you need to reset the suspension geometry, because everything has changed (toe, camber and castor values).

With a setup that was supplied new OEM (never mind whether factory or dealer fit) the dealer should have checked the geometry against the new values, not the standard book values for stock ride height.

Really, but they were fitted at the PDI, Were they not.?

In the case of the lowering springs only yes there done by dealer but I ordered a full suspension package three options where available at the time I ordered my car it's a active spec 1.6tdi, standard, lowered and rough terrain

Sorry, my Bad, on a phone so i thought you were on the subject of a Mk2 vRS & 205/40 R17 tyres.

They will ride a bit heavier on inside edge when lowered but it sounds like it had to much toe out, be that incorrectly adjusted after springs fitted at pdi or not adjusted at all imo.

kipperbailey,

were they Dunlop Sport Maxx on the car, & what pressure have you been running the tyres at?

What tyres have you fitted now?

Sorry, my Bad, on a phone so i thought you were on the subject of a Mk2 vRS & 205/40 R17 tyres.

I'm running 205/40/17's on mk1 Octavia rims my car is about 20mm lower than my neighbours car running the same size tyres and he had issues at first with tyre wear once he swapped from 15 to 17

Sorry but this is all just causing confusion, at least in my head.

Kipper Bailey,  MK2 vRS, Dealer option Lower Springs, fitted at the Dealers, on the OEM tyres,

the Tyre Fitter today said the springs were fitted wrong.

So he can ask the Dealer that supplied the car if they check the Alignment when fitting Dealer Option Springs.

They might ask what pressure he runs the tyres at, and how often he checks.

Sorry George to be causing confusion. The tyres were the original ones that came on the car (continental?). And I had lowering springs put on by a skoda dealer (40mm h&r) I have now been to a tyre place today to have some new tyres fitted after one 'blew out' to be told that whoever fitted the suspension the h&r didn't do the geometry near right and so I have 2ml on the outside of my tyre and a very thin piece of rubber on the other side Of the same tyre. So he said whoever fitted the aftermarket springs did it 'wrong'. George does this clear it up* sorry for confusion my phone is doing my head in

I have now fitted the Michelin pilot sport 3s on the car. Just now been to the skoda garage and they have refused to look at a noise being made by the steering wheel (separate problem) As the car has been lowered and voided warranty and they think (without even looking) that this is the problem. They refused to even look at the car. Have been on to skoda UK they are going to ring me back but they also want pictures of the tyres That have burnt out....

Sorry I understood you,

just not the other stuff about Diesel Fabias and Factory fit suspension.

So was it Dunlop Sports Maxx on, and what pressures did you run them at?

EDIT, PS

The Dealer Fitting the Spings might have voided the Warranty with Skoda UK if not the Factory Approved Springs.

It does not Stop the Dealership Employed by you to do the Job Properly from Guaranteeing their Work.

Did they supply and fit the Springs, or did you give them the Springs after sourcing yourself?

PPS

There is a Steering Rack issue on some Fabia Monte / vRS and others,

and that is when Standard, not lowered.

It's okay mate confusion seems to be rife today. I was running continental sport contact 2 at 2.5bar will grab some pics now..

They've refused to look at it under warranty. If I want them to look at it I'm gonna have to pay them to from what they said. I sourced the springs myself discussed it with the man at the dealership then they fitted them for me. Still got the receipt from it. Skoda UK still not called back.... hut they refused to look at the steering wheel as they assured me it was because of the springs....

Yeah.. seems a long time ago that now. Just seems majorly confusing if I'm honest...

Apologies for causing any confusion not intended

Guess what I was trying to say was any changes to suspension tyres etc tracking or wheel alignment should have been done and would have saved uneven wear

Finally back on the iPad. Phone was doing my nut in. After going to skoda dealer today nd them claiming they wouldn't even look at the car, skoda uk have rang and assured them they will be looking at the car, but they have said they do believe that the creaking from the steering wheel is a direct cause and or effect of lowering the car, whether this is true I'm not sure, I'd be open to anyone else who knows, they've said they will look at it but it will be at my costs if repairs need to be done. Bloody wonderful...
