Morning all

I'm having trouble with my Bluetooth media system i've connected my phone no problems I can play the music through the Bluetooth however I can't change the song through the stereo on multifunction steering wheel any ideas please

i do not think that is even possible. at least not with bluetooth.

 

Maybe you could change the songs via buttons on wheel if you have iphone/ipod connected with the right cable to the radio...and thats it.

The Bluetooth module in the Rapid is very basic and quite old, and while it supports A2DP audio streaming, it doesn't support device control over Bluetooth, nor does it support track name info via Bluetooth.

If you want to control your phone via your st eering controls, you'll need to invest in the correct MDI cable (assuming you have the MDI USB & 3.5mm lords below the aircon controls), or replace the head unit with an aftermarket one with more up-to-date Bluetooth A2DP support.

If it's a Swing unit you can't do it via that.

We'll let the OP confirm, but it does sound like he's got the Swing setup with the primitive Bluetooth module, which would fit with the description of his issue.

Steering wheel controls don't work here via Bluetooth for my phone tunes, so as the OP really. I have the Amundsen BTW.

You likely have the Amundsen without built-in Bluetooth, with the separate basic bluetooth module (so basically the same config as the Swing).

The Amundsen and Columbus units with integrated bluetooth have full A2DP support including track name info and control.

So what is A2DP and could I add it?  just curious really as I'm fine with my tunes on a USB or SD card and play from there with control on SW.

Sure - here's some more info.

A2DP stands for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile - it is a development of the original Bluetooth protocol that allowed for the streaming of audio over Bluetooth instead of just using it for phone calls. The first iterations of A2DP did just that - allowed you to stream audio output from a device to a Bluetooth receiver (car hands-free, headphones etc). Later iterations of A2DP added additional functionality, such as basic control (track forwards and back, fast forward and rewind, play and pause) and the transmission of track information and cover art.

However, the standalone bluetooth module used in the Rapid only supports the early A2DP iteration, so no control etc. There are other Bluetooth modules in the VAG family that do support control and track info etc, but I can't say with absolute certainty whether they can be successfully retrofitted to our cars.

Some versions of the Amundsen and Columbus nav units have their Bluetooth capability built into the head unit itself, rather than using an external module - these already support a far more modern Bluetooth implementation with things like control supported.

So looking at my Amundsen it will be with the earlier Bluetooth (basic) comtrol. Sometimes these controls don't work without the ignition on but have tried that mode and it not there.

Anyway as said it's not a concern really as my tunes are on a card so ok.

Thanks for your explanation of the tech stuff, I'm off later to see if my other car has this control via Bluetooth and the steering wheel controls.

That's strange as the loan Spaceback controlled the tracks via the steering wheel with Amundsen [emoji6]

More recent model Amundsen most likely.

I think it was the DAB one Chris.

I have the options in mine but I believe they use a different aerial set up?

I have the DAB Amundsen as well and although I can connect and play a playlist, its no joy on BT phone or ipod track control.

 

I really must get a functioning MDI - to - Litening cable when I get home.

The top 2 direction buttons on the top left corner changes tracks on mine with Bluetooth.

Is that just stepping through a playlist or can you move up and down through folders like when using an SD card?

If you have one knocking around, it's much easier than making the MDI work properly with iPhone 5+ or nano 7.

 

With a logical folder system on the SD card, its easy to search through your library to play stuff (or you could just leave it on random (MIX) mode).

 

I've got 32GB of music on one - (double what my nano 7 can hold too!)
