Oil Light on at 5k

Featured Replies

Ive got and Octy 2 2.0TDi. Oil light came on at around 6k. I added a litre of the expensive stuff and no further problems. Recently had its 1st service at 17.5k and the dealer gave me a free litre to keep in the boot!!

I think the bedding in period drinks oil but should be ok after that....no need to worry!!

I think you should have checked your oil level much earlier. In the beginning, I checked up on it every 2000 km, which is not a bad thing, because it dropped about 2 liters. Now, at 15000km, it doesnt use any oil anymore. But I still check it now and then, to make sure.

Driving with the oil level @ C-level is not ideal, I think. Waiting untill the oil light goes on, is not a good idea.

Stepfather's 2.0 TDi is following the above pattern.7000 miles and light came on.

It went off though next time he turned the ignition on! Garage said it might have just 'touched' the sensor.Hmmm. £11 to top up

On the Fabia oil thread, suggestion was if your light comes on,you might already have damaged the engine. Can't see that somehow

My octy 2 was an ex demo car with 5000 miles. After picking up the car (20 miles from the dealer) my oil light came on:eek: Did the car get a PDI?

Topped up with a litre of oil and all was well again. Seems to be about right 5000 miles plus = 1 litre of oil.

No oil used at all here yet at 2,700 miles.

i would check oil, water, tyre pres & fill up washer bottle once a week. used up 1l oil 1st 5000mls but on 25500 oils settled down.dont most engines just burn it up in the 1st 5/10000mls when running in?

The oil warning light is a pressure warning light, indicating when your oil pressure is lower than the lowest pressure that the engine can survive with at idle... so if the light comes on when the engine's not idling, then your engine is going to suffer!

Saying that though, my Leon (1.8T) had a 2-stage oil light - red for pressure, amber for level... don't know how low the oil level had to be to get the amber warning lit - regularly checked and topped up the oil!

One of our works vans is good at freaking out the new starters - after a dual-carriageway run, the oil gets so hot and thin, that when you stop at a junction, the oil light is nicely lit up!! Doesn't help that this van drinks oil either!! Have enquired with our workshops about this and they say it's normal for the vans... still don't like seeing that light come on tho!! (also, above 60mph, the water temperature gauge gets to the limit of the red!)

For those who get a 'free' bottle of oil when you have your car serviced - it's not free, skoda add the cost into your service as a matter of course - you can opt out though and have the cost removed from your bill but you have to ask them!

The oil light on the superb (without maxidot) is orange if level is low and red if pressure is low.

From the manual.

If the warning light (Pic of Oil Warning Light) lights up, the quantity of oil in the engine is probably too low, check as soon a possible the oil level or top up.

If it starts flashing it indicates the sensor may be faulty.

So the new Octavia doesn't give any warning about having no oil pressure??

Remind me not to buy one!!

Actually when I started the car today I noticed there are two oil warning lights, one amber and one red. So I wonder if it's the same as the Superb, as previously mentioned. Amber is low level, Red is low pressure??

Doesn't the manual tell you?

My oil level light came on today at 4700 miles. Was a bit shocked at the price,

They must have seen you coming, do you not have a Farmers co-operative near you they are always good value and stock all grades of motor oils.

Provided the oil meets the spec it is daft to pay for costly TV promoted brands.

Nope, it only mentions the amber oil light. So it's possible they are using some sort of universal panel that has the red oil light but it doesn't actually do anything.

Oil light came on at 5000 miles, it needed one litre of oil.

Now on 7000 miles, checked the oil today and it needs another litre:eek:

This is getting expensive, I hope it begins to slow down after 10000 miles.

I put a litre in at 5000 but light hadn't come on - just a dipstick test. Mine [for petrol engine] was Castrol 0W30 from Halfords, and cost

I've had the same with my 1.9TDI octy2. It used about 1 liter the first 5000 km (I didnt wait untill the light went on ;-) ). Since then, it didnt use one drop :-) (25000 km)

I had a bit of an oil consumption issue when I firstpicked my car up and was told that was due to many drivers bedding the engine in when it wasn't required to do it as much with the older ewngines.

Since the thing had 15k miles on it i kept the revs up a bit and then topped the oil up when it got down to half. Since then I have probably used a litre over 20k miles, which is nothing :)

Not sure if this was just coincidence, but it might be worth topping the oil up and trying this if you have high oil useage. Standard if you break it it's your own fault disclaimer here :P

My 2.0 TDI PD engine hasn't used any after 1500miles.

I've read the list and got worried that it may happen.

With respect to oils just find an equivalent with the same SAE rating and tested to 5061 I think I brought some Gastrol tested to the same standard. i.e it has to be long life fully synthetic oil tested to the same spec if it is, it will be fine to use it.

HOWEVER ENSURE THE SAE RATING IS THE SAME ELSE YOU'RE CHANGING THE VISCOSITY RATING OF YOUR OIL!!!!

With respect to trying to find the Shell oil used it's bloody impossible around here thats why I found an equivalent.

Agreed, even a quite large Shell Petrol Station didn't have any, I got my first bottle from a Skoda dealer then just got another manufacturers equivalent with all the same numbers on the front :o

I phoned my local dealer for the grade then got it [Castrol] at Halfords
