Oil Light on at 5k

Featured Replies

My oil light came on yesterday at around 5 thousand miles, the car is an Octy 2 1.9 TDi and is around 3 months old. Called into the dealer to pick up the correct oil and when I checked the dip stick it was just at the top of section C which according to the manual means TOP UP IMMEDIATELY (or similar :) )

Has anyone else had their oil light come on when the car was so new and anyone else reckon my Octy seems to be using too much oil?

Not certain (leaving techs to confirm) but i've read a lot of posts in the past saying some new engines drink oil in the time they are been bedded in.

Can use up to 1 litre of oil per 1000km (600 miles?) even when run in according to VAG specs.

Also says the same in the manual.

Keep an eye on your oil - it'll probably not go down so quick any more tho...

It took virtually a litre to get it back up to the top of section B, hope I don't have to top up every few months! I only ever had to top the washer fluid up on my Astra in between services.

The (old) Octavia has a warning in the Owner's Manual that the oil level should be checked at regular intervals, and it advises that this is best done each time you refuel. Have you been doing that?

My new Occy 1.9tdi needed a top up at about 6,000 miles when the oil light came on.

My old Occy with the same engine also needed a few top ups in the early days before settling down to virtually zero oil consumption.

Don't think you have anything to worry about.

Last vRS used zero oil between services [it only had one] up to 12500 miles. New FSI has used none but only done 2500 so far.

PD's tend you use more than thier petrol counterparts.

I have done just over 5000 miles and used 3/4 litre of oil so far since May. 2L tdi

I haven't, TBH I think checking the oil every time I fill up (Could be twice a week) is a tad excessive. Might have to get into a routine of checking oil and tyre pressures more often.

Perfectly normal for the 2.0 PD to use up to 1L of oil in the 1st 5000 miles (1.25L in the case of the 1.9). Once engine is run in a bit it should decrease significantly. I'd recommend checking the oil every 1,000 miles (more often if your car gets constant abuse). It's not bad considering the 1.6 8v Vauxhall petrol engine can use up to 1L every 1000 miles and Mazda reckon you should check oil level EVERY time you fill up an RX-8 (every other time you fill up with a VW Golf R32).

I plan to blag 1L of oil out of my dealer when I pick up my car. VW throw it in for free.

RX-8 is practically a two stroke. They gobble fuel and oil like its going out of fashion.

And if they dont fire on the first turn of the key the tend to flood and loose compression.

Yeah I have used about a half litre so far. 7,000 miles. 1.9 TDI

My 1.6 99T MY has never needed topping up between services - coming up 70k miles now.

Seems a bit strange to check the oil level when you refuel -- unless you happen to park your car overnight on the garage forecourt, just driving to the pump is going to get the oil nicely circulated in the engine (i.e. no longer in the sump). Guaranteed to give you a false reading I would have thought.

I thought you were meant to check oil, on level ground, when quite warmed up but after being stopped a couple of minutes. So after a run to your petrol station [unless you live next door!] and fuelling, going into pay etc., it should be just about right. But if you have to check it every week, something's not right, unless of course you do enormous mileage. I do tyres every week [in case I've run over a nail!] and oil about once a month - so far the oil level has never noticeably changed.

I've got an Octy 2 2.0TDi. Oil light came on at around the same time and a litre of the expensive stuff was required. Since then, nowt although i do check with dipstick every few weeks!! I'm on nearly 16k miles now.

I'm no expert but even after you leave your car for a while there is still oil in the engine above the filter as it has non-return valve. This is to ensure there is oil where it is needed as soon as you start the car from cold before the oil pump gets a chance to start circulating the oil from the sump.

I'm half way down my 2nd bottle of very expensive oil....car's done 14000miles(new in June)...on the good side-very pleased with mpg(45+)

Is it just me, but I checked the dipstick and couldn't tell where the oil level was at all. Fancy putting a black dipstick in.

I'd done 3300 miles so thought I might as well chuck half a litre in to be safe, but had no warning light.

Now done 3800 miles in 26 days - is this a record ?? :D

I know, silly idea. Probably the same muppet that made it out of bendy stuff, so it doesn't go back in without a fight.

  • 4 weeks later...

I had my OCTY MK 2. Ambience estate 1.9 105 on the 23 March after 6 weeks had to top up the oil level but since then it has remained the same. My OCTY MK 1. 1.9 110 i only had to top that up once in the 5 years I owned it

I try to check oil & spray levels regularly. Given up on the spray level one, just carrying a 1 liter bottle of concentrated with me now so I can just refill as required (adding water ;)) - mine has the PD130 engine and that used about 1 liter of oil up to the 10k service. There are some that hardly used any, and others that used a load more than that.

I'd check weekly at least, ditto for tyre pressures etc. If you are going on a 'several hour' trip (assuming it's not your daily commute) I'd do those checks before setting off - doesnt take all that long and it's better than having a blow-out at speed coz your tyre pressures are (way) too low/high.

:)
