Modifying horror story on Seat forum

Salutary tale of what can go wrong modifying cars inside the warranty and on finance

Very old thread so apologies if its been posted before but I hadn't heard of it, saw it posted up on Pistonheads

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2133732&postcount=50

Apparently the owner had to take out a personal loan to pay for the car, the fault finally turned out to be a blown relay so nothing to do with the remap

  • Serves him right tbh, altering a car that he doesn't own and only rents the nwonders why the owners get miffed at it. Perhaps he should actually buy the car before lowering its value with modification

  • Corrected for you

  • Open goal for them to remove the burden of a warranty from a car and bill the owner for more work.

The risk you take when tuning a financed car and taking it back under warranty.

Should of probably seen it coming tbf.

True but plenty do take that risk  .

Oh yeah. Wont backfire for everyone, but some it does doesnt it.

Bet he wishes he took it to someone good and private first to check the basics.

But even then dont expect to not have to pay for it.

And here's me not wanting to lower mine a tad in case it voids the warranty, I don't think it will but I'll pass for now. I wouldn't dare do that sort of stuff to a car I don't actually own yet, more fool him I say.

Can't say I'm too surprised, either with Seat's response or the driver's attitude.

Plenty more recent threads on the subject.

Only in the past few months there was quite a bit of discussion on the Subject in this section with a Briskoda Member with a Seat,

he checked things out with Seat UK as i remember.

A good local mechanic might of found that problem n sorted it for £50 though. It was only a relay.

Just think he should of perhaps looked into it before going to the dealers and lining himself up for exactly what happened.

You can buy Skodas from the dealer here in NZ with REVO and warranty. :D

So maybe things have changed now.

Can you still do that in NZ & are Skoda NZ covering the Warranty on the Engine?

You could do that in the UK where Skoda Dealerships were EVO Dealers,

but Skoda UK's 3 year manufacturers warranty was not covering you.

In Germany & other countries you can have a Warranty with the Tuning Company with a new car,

but is it Skoda / Volkswagen Group covering / underwriting any Warranty Claim,  Or the Policy bought with the product?

In the UK you can have your Upgrade with Ford / Mountune & have a Full Manufacturers Warranty.

Surely if the faulty relay wasn't caused by the remap the punter shouldn't have had to foot the bill

They might be able to try suing him for breach of contract if there was something in there about modifying

Not sure it's quite so clear cut as some are making out

I think Seats point is that it's not his car to modify , he doesn't own it and if someone else has been modifying the wiring (which was their belief) they had no obligation to investigate the fault nor put it right . Since the owner had basically broken their car they wanted paying for it at which point he could do what he liked to it.

Im sure theyd find a way to blame it on a modification if it came to it though

I thought in those circumstances it was for the dealer to prove it was, not just come up with some fanciful excuse

Is it the Dealers Responsibility?

I thought their Employees & Technicians just check and report to the Warranty Provider, Underwriter or Warranty Manager / Management what they find.

Forward the Diagnostics & Visually Check Components.

It is not Dealerships that are paying for Warranty Work, they are just acting as an agent for the Warranty Provider.

They have Responsibilities to the vehicles owner as well because they are being employed as an agent & provider of services to them.

OK, if we're being pedantic, maybe I should have said the manufacturer's responsibility, since ultimately it is they who will have the final say in what they will or will not pay out

To be pedantic,

it is the Warranty Underwriters, and that is not Automatically going to be the manufacturer.

& Ultimately what they say might not be what actually comes to pass,

eg the BMW driven at a Track Day.

So their 'Final Say', was then followed up by a further final say,

and a Court Decision if a Civil Action had been raised might have had a further Final Say.

Often a Manufacturers Final Say and Decision can be changed when an Independent  Expert does further Investigations

& Technical Reports and show Fundamental Designs & Manufacturing Faults.

Also where a Legal Expert can pick holes in the Warranties T& C's.

Particularly in the UK.

I'm glad that's clarified! ;)

..IBTL..

Just having a final say on the issue.. :D

Where did the info come from that the ultimate problem turned out to be a relay, and which relay to what part of the car

If it was in no way engine related, I still take the view that Seat are the ones who have jumped the gun, and it's them who want stuffing, notwithstanding how stupid the OP was in having the car mapped, especially in the pig-headed fashion in which they dealt with it
