M25 speeding

Featured Replies

if a friend was doing 83 on the M25 at 11pm at night and got caught by a gatso (about 5 miles from the M3 junction).

He is worried its a 6 pointer. could anyone clarify this please as he's had his licence only a short amount of time (under 2 years)

thanks

dave

and before anyone asks - i'm not hypothetically speaking for myself here :)

You don't say if clockwise or anti clock.

Clockwise in road works with lower limits as already said.

Anti clockwise , no road works 70mph limit, may get away with 3pts

think the max leeway on speeding is +10% + 2mph

So 79 in a 70 should be ok!!!

wot about the time limitation & 1st class post' date=' does that still apply.

i remeber seeing a link to Five-o about it ?[/quote']

The scamera partnership/or plod ticket office have 14 days to issue a NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) to the registered keeper of the vehicle flashed. Remember they only have to prove they posted it, not prove that you recieved it! Damn unfair!

It may take longer than 14 days to arrive on your doorstep if you were not the registered keeper but were driving the car that got flashed!

I'm pretty sure that "The not signing the NIP" loophole has now been closed :(

I circuit the M25 regularly (almost daily) and the only section you normally need to worry about is the variable limit section, there aren't any cameras on the rest of it, I usually trundle around at a steady 100mph and never had any problems -

- Except in roadworks! use extreme caution as the cameras will flash you for doing anything over the 40mph temporary limit! due to the fact there are workmen about, therefore their safety is paramount and the cameras always work!!

43mph/3points/

I think the PACE statement is the current method of choice ;)

Pace????

No it doesn't, it's upto a max of 3%. If it read upto that much (10%) then there's something wrong with it, factories deliberately put it up to max 3% and not more.

Construction & Use tolerances throughout Europe are +10%-0%, it may be different where you are. Mine's clocking at about 6% high.

We always end up arguing over this Mil :P

It's well detailed on the pepipoo forum mate.

Pace????

Basically that you're admitting the offence under duress, not because you actually did it - a breach of the law in itself. :finger:

Pretty well summed up that Steve

I've been done by that poxy camera near the M40 and never heard anything and I also got flashed by a camera about 2 miles AFTER the M25 roadworks, just past the M3 turn going anti-clock, never heard anything and the barstewards move the live cameras regularly too.

PS i wasn't exactly going for the land speed record at the time either.

AND.....the police can often be spotted on a bridge over the M25 not far from J16, but they don't stand in the middle of the bridge but right over to one side.

My car's speedo reads 32 indicated at 30 true, 43 at 40, 53.5 at 50, 64 at 60 and 74.5 at 70 - on the original wheels and tyres. That equates to overreading rates of 6.7%, 7.5%, 7%, 6.7% and 6.4% - an average of 6.86%. Other members have noted similar error rates. Speedometers are allowed to overread by up to 10% as part of European type Approval but cannot underread.

How do we know how accurate the gps systems are anyway?

The same as for a speedo - by checking using a stopwatch and distance markers on a straight road.

Mine does similar. What you'll find is that manufacturers aim to produce their electro-mechanical speedos to overread by an average of more-or-less 5%, thus giving themselves a manufacturing tolerance of +/- 5% that's still legal to be fitted. This is cheaper than trying to make them read spot-on, and then binning the 50% that underread...

Therefore electro-mechanical speedos come out with tolerances of +10% / -0% of absolute, hence the variability in people's readouts.

These days, however, you often find that the speedo is not an electro-mechanical system as it was in the old days (a dynamo attached to the drivetrain, and the speedo actually being a calibrated ammeter), but is all tied in with the ECU. Therefore, the needle is just an interface device, and is only kept for familiarity reasons (just like we still steer using a wheel when a joystick could be argued to be better). Even though these are inherently much more accurate, I gather they are still required to fit within the +10% / -0% tolerance, in order to allow for tyre wear and changes of rim or tyre size.

As for GPS accuracy, this will be directly related to the unit's resolution and update frequency. I reckon most read to within 2 or 3m these days, and update say ten times per second (this is just a guess though). This will actually mean that they are less accurate the faster you go, as the 3m resolution is a smaller fraction of the 3-odd metres you travel in a 1/10 second at 70mph, compared to the 1 or so metres you travel in a 1/10 second at 30mph. The GPS then takes an average reading over the space of a few seconds, thus improving the overall accuracy of the readout into the region of 1 or 2% at motorway speeds...

Or at least I think that's how they work...

Was it actually a Gatso or was he flashed from one of the overhead things? Has he got the NIP through yet? 14 days from midnight of the offence, etc....

He might be alright. There is a famous M25 camera between M4 and M40 that keeps going off around 80mph and never gets people into trouble for it.

I got flashed by that one once :o

hmmm..at the risk of upsetting even more people..an old bikers dodge..

"my nuberplates were recently stolen" I was in bed asleep at the time.ask the dog.
