What is wrong with my windscreen?

Featured Replies

Drove the car for the first time in rain last night and it was pretty dangerous, when wet my windscreen is covered in what looks like oil spots that the wiper can't shift. I have been out today with glass cleaner and even neat washing up liquid and they will not go. Last night in heavy rain and with streetlights it was pretty scary. Anyone got any ideas?

Have tried cleaning inside and out, no joy. Probably sounds like I am overreacting but it was seriously scary caught in heavy rain at night as I could barely see. I even pulled over for 15 minutes hoping the rain would stop but just got heavier.

A good tip given to me by ChrisRs is to make sure the screen is dry, then wipe over with neat isopropyl alcohol B.P. (available in any chemist), then follow with screen cleaner. This worked on my recently aqquired Octavia on which the screen had been waxed by an over enthusiastic previous owner.

No Luck :( Just tried cleaning with Eclipse fluid, a very pure methanol designed for cleaning image sensors and glass. Still the same, looks like I need a new screen which is crazy as it looks brand new, not a single scratch or chip on it!

Autoglym do a glass polish, might be worth a try.

Also consider changing (or cleaning) your wiper blades a as if they are contaminated, they will affect the new screen too.

When I picked my car up it was similar (but no way as bad), I've used washing up liquid and glass cleaner so far and it is much better.

It's probably covered with wax, the best stuff to remove it is methylated spirit.

I'll go and get some meths and give it a go with that cheers.

Or fire

Or fire

The two together could have exciting results.

Try some toothpaste or something like t cut on a small area and see if it improves. Carplan do a glass compound but I would say it might be lamanination. In which case a new screen is needed.

No luck with tcut or meths,I think it must have delamination.

Could it be tree sap or something similar? I've got a cherry tree at the bottom of my drive and the blossom if left long enough on the paintwork makes a hell of a mess.

I wonder if this could be the case with your windscreen? Just a thought but then I'd have thought pure alcohol would have cleaned it unless anybody knows of a remedy for tree sap.

Good luck.

Not sure my insurance would allow a claim on it, that said it is pretty dangerous as it is.

is your car still under warranty? I would bring your problem to the attention of the dealer

Noooooo it's a 2006 bought privately

Don't think that's delaminiation , could be wrong. You could try polishing it out but by the time you have got all the kit together it will probably be better to pay the windscreen excess so check you policy

You may prefer for a stone to hit it in the meantime ;) rather than claim due to the marks

I might buy some panel wipe, I have ordered some bosche wipers and will see how I get on.

I found detailing clay works well to remove funny grime when I don't have a suitable solvent or detergent to hand. Mystified as to what might have caused it although I am sure 'funny grime' is not the scientific name for it.

As a first fix, try changing the wipers. OR get the screen wet, rub it with a cloth, see if you still get the same smearing, at least then you can narrow down if it is the screen or not.

Rubbing the screen with a wet cloth produces the speckles. I have really scrubbed at it with a scotch pad and neat washing up liquid and several other things. If I then wet it again still there. Really odd.

I would take it to either a windscreen replacement company or a glazer and let them have a look. I wouldn't use new wipers until they've had a look at it. The "splotches" look like they've been daubed on with a cloth or cotton wool. From the photograph it appears your wipers are going over them without smearing or distorting them, so whatever it is is well set in.

If I saw that on my vehicle I would use Bilt Hamber. Korrosol 'fallout' remover, but to save you buying more products and possibly wasting money, try taking it to a couple of windscreen repairers or glazers to see what they say.
