Buying a VRS, pre-sale service

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

First post of what I hope isn't too many....

Just in the process of buying a 2007 VRS SE. The garage have agreed to perform a service pre-sales.

I've read that the stipulation for 5w40 500 01 is essential for the good running of these due to the way the oil interacts with the cam.

The garage I'm buying it from (when I asked them to confirm the oil type they'd use) said they'd use superior 5w30 as it's thinner.

Should I shout and scream not to, and just say I'll get it done by a specialist, or let them? I've never dealt with them before so unsure of their reputation.

The car has been full Skoda serviced every 10k since new with one owner and is in exceptional condition, I don't want to ruin that.

Appreciate any replys,

thanks guys

Ric.

So long as it is  505.01 spec oil, whether it's 5w30 or 5w40 shouldn't make much difference.

Quantum Platinum 505.01 is 5W40.

Quantum Long Life 507 is 5W30

Both are good for the Fabia :)

Quantum Platinum is a fully synthetic SAE 5W-40 engine oil for all year round use in applications where an oil of that viscosity grade and performance level (API SM/CF, ACEA C3) is recommended. Quantum Platinum uses an optimised blend of fully synthetic base oils and a carefully selected and balanced additive. Not suitable for VW Group vehicles following a Variable Service regime. Low ash formulation to maintain Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) performance (note: VW Group vehicles fitted with a DPF must use Quantum LongLife III oil) system. Approved for use in Volkswagen Group Pumpe Düse engines (meets the VW 505 01 specification) on fixed service intervals. Approved for Volkswagen 502 00, 505 00 and 505 01 and BMW LongLife-04. Meets the specifications of dexos2, MB 229. 31 and MB 229. 51, Fiat 9. 55535-S2 and Renault RN 0700/0710.

Quantum LongLife III 5W-30 fully synthetic engine oil is formulated to keep engines and exhaust after-treatment devices, especially diesel particulate filters, free from deposits. Prolonging the life of these components reduces running costs, minimises emissions and protects the environment. Quantum LongLife III 5W-30 is suitable for gasoline and diesel vehicles where Volkswagen performance specifications 504 00 and 507 00 are required. Quantum LongLife III 5W-30 also meets the requirements of most of the earlier Volkswagen oil specifications which means that it is suitable also for many older gasoline and diesel engines. Quantum Long Life III has now been approved to BMW Long-life04 approvals, whilst also meeting MB specifications 229.31 and MB 229.51.

Note: Quantum PD Diesel must be used in Volkswagen vehicles with PD Diesel engines on Time/Distance servicing.

You absolute legend!

What a speedy response!

Thanks for the heads up. Just a bit over protective about my new baby.

Thanks!!.

Only difference between the 30 and 40 is the viscosity of the oil itself, thinner is more desirable for shorter trips as it reaches optimum temp. quicker whilst the thicker is preferable for longer distances, but honestly all in all they're both perfectly acceptable.

As soft scoop says above - as long as they meet the 505.01 requirement it's good to go.

They say they're putting in Castrol Edge 5w30.

They also say they've spoken to a VW main dealer and that's what they use too.

sounds legit to me...... anyone offer anything to the contrary?

I'd be fairly confident that a mechanic would know which oil to put into a PD engine. Don't worry. As long as it meets 505.01 it is in the clear.
