Front disc brake retention screw

Hey guys,

 

Can anyone give me a part number or something for the retention screws that hold front disc brakes in place?

In the process of replacing the discs we found that the screws had both threaded so had to drill them out and I want to source new ones asap!

Pretty much any old M6 x 16 countersunk screw will do though, just don't tighten it up too much, and stick a dab of copper grease on the threads so next removal is easy.

Are they actually needed? Tried to shift my rear ones once and it was stuck fast, once the wheel bolts are in ain't it irrelevant?

Only there to stop the disc moving when a wheel is off, perfectly safe without them

I'm currently refurbing my front brakes and both my screws are missing and have been for some time.

Not the end of the world, but a pita when putting the wheels back on as the disc can move a bit.

Just ordered a pack of 10 screws after reading this thread :D

I had a B5 Passat and it did not have disc retainer screws on the front from new, VW's way round that was to provide a plastic threaded peg to screw in instead of a wheel bolt when removing a wheel. I would have been happier if they had used disc retainers all round.

There used to be someone selling stainless steel screws on ebay for these cars, I fitted them to wife's Polo all round when the car was new.

figured as much, as our lasses old car didn't have em.

Idiot mechanics overtighten them, they only need to be nipped up since they can't fall out because the back of the wheel holds them in place. I've had to use an impact driver in the past but use a buzzgun these days if they're tight.

I had to use an impact driver to get a couple of mine off. Just a tad too tight for a screwdriver to be reliable and I didn't want to knacker the heads and have to get the Dremel out.

Depends whether you're changing a wheel at the side of the road, in the dark and the disc turns on the hub. In that case, yeah, you wish they were there.

If the are stubborn or rounded off, the best way of removing them is to wallop the surrounding area with a club hammer, the shock will loosen it sufficiently so it dan be unscrewed normally.
