Are you after a serious all-terrain off-roader, or something which can handle a few bumps and a bit of mud but will spend most of it's time on the road?

Rob.

Subaru Forrester.

It will mainly spend its days doing the daily 14 mile motorway commute with the wife then spend the weekends out with me if I'm marshalling. Don't need a serious off roader although I fancy a Land Rover but the wife doesn't - she still wants her creature comforts.

The ground clearance is the main issue - fabia bottoms out and the ride is a back breaker.

Forrester is out of the window as they don't do a diesel.

I bought a 4.0 Grand Cherokee for under 16K.

Dec 04 with 6,700 miles on the clock from a Jeep Delaership, had been a demonstrator from new.

Well chuffed, as it is excellent value, really comfy. I had a budget of about 18K, so the rest is going on a LPG conversion.

Nissan X trail.Best out of the 'medium' sized 4x4's

If you want decent fuel economy, you should not be looking at off roaders anyway. They are all brick style aerodynamics and excess weight, high drag tyres and drink problem included. I like the LPG conversion option though.

Chris

PS if you are a hairdresser, you could consider a RAV 4.

I know fuel economy isn't going to be great.

I'm not going down the 4x4 route for any kind of style statement - I really need the ground clearance and it's only 4x4s that offer the clearance.

Like I said before the other option is to put a gravel set up on the Furby.

Octavia II 105PD 4x4? Raised suspension for better ground clearance and part time 4x4 so fuel consumption should still be good.

Used Nissan X-Trail?

This is my favourite choice Eddy - Octy is on the options plan so could switch over to one of these.

Keep your existing car for daily use then get a ****e old landy for weekend offroad fun

Confused now.If it is Mrs Spinndrift who fancies something 4x4 what happens if you put a gravel set up on the furby (and what is a gravel set up?).

Does she have the octy?

Mrs S uses the Octy day to day and I use the furby as I do the higher mileage so it's cheaper for me to use the furby.

A gravel set up would mean a change of suspension for a forest rally set up - new springs and dampers etc.

Disco? Pretty much as capable as a Defender off-road, but with all the creature comforts on road :D

Chris

What the hells a disco ?

how about a used L200?? the animal spec is quite nice...

A discovery.

Not looked at L200s yet - haven't reached M in the car search alphabet.

Hyundai Santa Fe

Terracan

Tucsan

All with 5 years warrenty :) my wife has the Santa fe, all leathered up Sat Nav on a 54, the new ones now have cruise other stuff, plus you can get then for 16k as Ex Hyundai used vehicles & they are comfortable on the motorway + do go offroad a bit.

Could also try the kia Sorrento, sportage, Mitubishi Shogun,

alot of choice out there I am afraid, some test driving coming up I feel hehee.

It certainly does look very good on paper.

I think we'll end up test driving a few different models.

Well we've been out and had a good look at all the options and have decided to test drive the X-Trail as it offers everything we want, is solidly put together and is well specced.

So long as the test drive goes well it will be goodbye octy.

Shame, if you could just use something for the marshalling you could get a cheap old ('bout 50p) BX GTi, put the suspension in high setting, and do some high speed forest rallying yourself.

Just after the L200 is Nissan's Navaro from 200 quid a month, not that I've looked...170 2.5 td out of the box, creature comforts and it can carry a furby in the back :D

However that geezer on the telly pointed somthing out, the L200's have grease nipples on the rear axle, need greasing every 2k....I wonder if folk actually do get there grease guns out...

X-trail's are good and a nice half way house....freelanders are possible, but can be sick inducing from reports of friends...that said I'd happily take one for a test drive for a weekend to see how I could cope on normal driving routes into wales etc...

For High read SOLID !!

Actually had one of these, seriously under rated car, had loads of fun with it & it was 101% reliable.
