Speed Warning Gadget

Featured Replies

Does anyone know of a speed warning gadget of some sort? Set it to say 30mph and it warns you if you exceed it.

Could be an App, a feature of a satnav or even a seperate device. I know cruise controls seem to be able to do it but dont want to go down that route.

Cheers

Can this not be set within the car?

I have mine set at 70mph

Here Maps warns when you exceed the limit - available across multiple platforms.

Would that be using VCDS to go into the ecu and set it that way. If not it may be a feature of better spec vehicles. Good idea if it can be done though.

Of course it is dependent on what car you have however I use the Maxidot.

When I hit that speed the dash makes a noise and tells me I have exceeded the set speed.

The 'advantage' of the one I suggested is that it will warn you when you exceed the (whatever and each) speed limit by a few mph.

The car's inbuilt speed warning only allows one speed warning to be set.

No it’s under maxidot... providing you have it.

Most sat navs do this, with a visual and audible warning. Though I wouldn't ever rely on them speed limits can change and do, with the devices not regularly updated you could be lulled into a false sense of security, there's no substitute for good observations. ..don't ask why I know this...  :(

A lot of GPS speed camera detectors offer this, I have a Cheetah C50 which can have 5 different speed warning settings as well as showing a GPS derived actual speed that you are doing rather then relying on the underestimating car speedo - of course you also get a full range of speed camera warnings which can help save your licence.

Sadly the SE model doesnt have maxidot so an external device it is then.

I tried a phone app this morning but it doesnt change speed automatically, have to press the speed I want at each change. More of a distraction.

Going to look at TomToms this afternoon.

I use an Ultra Guage. It can be set to measure a myriad of car data with appropriate alarms set.

I bought mine to monitor engine temp on our Smart Car.

Imported from USA for £60

PERSONALLY - I favour the MK1 EYEBALL . Installed in every driver ,it  is instrumental in my 50 year of driving in avoiding every camera I've met on UK roads.

Or for those of us who don't have perfect eyesight or luck at age 67+

FREE APP - CamerAlert from pocketgpsworld.

Full UK Camera database with audiovisual speed warnings.

Simple enough that even an ATC cadet could use it ;)

Personally I've also relied on the MKI eyeball. But found myself at odds quite often of late. Normally 40's or these pesky 50's in lovely open countryside.

So my gadget of choice is my citigo :) The PID has the GPS pinger for over speed alarms.  I'm looking for a HUD gadget, as the comfortable position for me obscures the dials. Used the Pug 3008, it had one and gimmick I thought, till I got into another car without it.

Most phones allow you to have a HU display.

AN 8" Asus tablet running Navmii does it for me, although as mentioned, the warnings are only as good as the map updates; I noticed a number of incorrect ones on a 150 mile rural run across the South/South West of England over the weekend.

The recently updated gfx are much clearer than the last version, but the search engine is now pants, needing an internet connection to work properly half the time.

I see from the options that I can now have Wallace (& Gromit) give me my directions for only £1.99

Personally I've also relied on the MKI eyeball.

Cheap, easy to use, doesn't need power.

It's not that hard is it.

Yes I find it particularly good - apart from in the dark on unlit Scottish trunk roads at 3AM - flash! flash!

Even without the unbearable smugness of it's proponents, it is a fine daylight tool though.

However this thread was a request for techie options, not smart-ass ones.

I use Speed Camera by Sygic downloaded from the Playstore for Android.

Pretty impressed with it so far. Only issue is when on motorway and passing an over/under pass with a lower speed limit, it reverts to the lower limit of the two and then proclaims loudly "Speed limit exceeded!"

You can overlay it over other apps. So far it has proved to be very accurate.
