Idle, Battery ,Radio, Throttle.

Featured Replies

Greetings All

It's my girlfriend's mum's car, so I never seem to have a lot of time to work on it. Recently replaced the front springs and  outer CV boots. And didn't get time to look at the engine problem.

It's a 2005 1.2 47kw BME Ambiente.

When starting from cold the tick over is erratic, between 750 & 1200.

When you try to rev it, it has a slight delay and seems to either be starved of fuel or too much air.

Also it sounds like it's blowing around the exhaust manifold area.

Once the engine is warm the problem decreases.

The throttle body flap appears slightly open when the engine is off .

I've checked the two pipes from the air box and they are attached and seem to look ok.

Replaced the spark plugs & air filter.

I read a thread regarding disconnecting the battery for 40 mins then starting and leaving it on tick

over for 30mins. Only problem being is the radio code has gone walk about, so was considering putting a 12v supply to the radio via it's fuse. I have no extraction keys and don't know if the radio supply disconnects when removed from its cradle.

I have a D900 scan tool which can give me live data, but not knowing what things should be means the information it gives I can't decipher.

My questions are.

will I upset the resetting by supplying a voltage to the radio.

Should the throttle body be closed completely when off. (mine is in my car)

What other areas should I be looking in.

Thanks in advance

Throttle valve being slightly open when off sounds normal to me, both cars that we own with 'fly by wire' are like this.

If the car has an EGR valve, have a look from below to check that your exhaust blow isn't coming from there. On the earlier AZQ code it wasn't unheard of for a core-plug in the base of the valve to leak/blow out.

The picture in google image shows what the valve and the core plug in the bottom look like (brass coloured bit).

If it is leaking there, that might explain the erratic tickover too.

Edit: If the stereo is the factory one, I don't think it forgets its code when battery is disconnected.  I'm not sure you'll achieve much by disconnecting anyway; that can't mend anything.
