Lane assist, doesn't work when heading west in the evening

Featured Replies

Noticed my lane assist doesn't seem to work when heading into the hazy evening sun - worked fine in rain and slightly darker conditions - I assume camera can't cope with the dynamic range, not sure if any one else's does this?

It needs sunglasses!

But it doesnt unreasonable that ththe sun can make it blind when at the wrong angle.

There was discussion in another thread about the auto-light function activating during certain months in Scandanavian countries due to low sun angle which has a camera in the same location.

As Gromle said, this does seem reasonable if the sun is at the wrong angle.

It's the same in heavy rain.  The camera can't distinguish the road markings so the green light on the dash turns amber.  That is the only warning you get though!

How does the Lane Assist work in real life?

The road markings havent been repainted after the winter yet, so i havent had the chance to test it yet.

Opinions vary.  I only use it on long trips to help reduce stress and tiredness.  Others find it too intrusive and think it adds to the stress..

Edit - do you mean 'how does it physically work?'

You answered what I wondered.

I know the theory behind it, I just havent had the chance to test what its like to drive with it.

On the car setting on the radio under the lane assist settings there two boxes you can tick

I only have the top box ticked, I find the car more drivable than having both boxes ticked, a little less aggressive

This how I have mine set now and find it quite good - more of a safety thing if I happen to look away and stray from lane, rather than knocking you to and fro all the time. I only use it on longer trips generally though.

Funnily though the camera worked fine in heavy rain just the sun it does like.

I keep it on the lighter setting as well and it works surprisingly well. It even copes with the really poorly visible lines on Finnish roads (after studs have worn them down during the winter).

The only time I take it off, is in heavy rain. In those conditions you sometimes have no other way of avoiding standing water in tire grooves except to drive on the line.

Worked a treat yesterday over 370 miles or so but was heading away / across from the sun!
