Private/Custom/Cherished plates

Featured Replies

Just wondering whether custom/private plates have to be declared as a modification and whether having one increases your premium?

Also is it legal to put an irish-style plate (Three letters, four numbers) on a UK vehicle?

Cheers!

Eh?

Only DVLA registered plates are legal within the UK, this'll include Northern Irish registered plates DAZ, FAZ type ones which you can pick up for £100 or less usually. Of course you would notify your insurance company if you purchased and changed the registration number.

Custom number plates, often referred to as 'show' plates are not road legal so therefore cannot be declared to your insurance company.

I didn't realise there was a difference between custom and personalised. I'm basically on about the ones that are road legal that you buy from the DVLA or regtransfers or whatever. Do they have to be declared as a modification and will they increase the premium at all?

Are you seriously asking by having a private plate would increase your insurance and need to class it as a 'modification'?

You would only need to contact your insurance to change your reg plate so it's insured.

You need to inform your insurer so they can update the MID so you do not keep getting stopped by ANPR for no insurance. Most insurers will charge an admin fee to change the policy, but it's not considered a modification.

3 letters & 4 numbers format are UK plates issued by and controlled by the DVLA in Swansea, they are just a UK regional format. The first 999 of these plates from each initial letter prefix change are held for auction. They are not age related in anyway, they are a district format intended for anti terrorism, but popular with people in GB who many then refer to them as private plates worth £££ when selling etc LOL. Irish plates are white front and back with EU Ident markers, 2/3numbers (depicting year), 1/2 letters (depicting county) and up to 5 numbers (for actual registration number).

These are Irish plates:

As said above you have to inform your insurer of the change of registration mark assigned to the vehicle with the DVLA, you may occur an admin charge in relation to this depending on the insurer. It would not be classed as a modification, as changing the letters/numbers on the pieces of plastic attached to the car are not an alteration from the specification of the vehicle itself.
