remove center wheel caps

Featured Replies

Hi, Is there a supplied tool to remove the center wheel caps?

Assume they can be removed with the wheel on.....whats the procedure to avoid damage?

Usually with the wheel off by knocking from the inside with, say, the wooden handle of a hammers frinstance.

IIRC there's a little hook type tool in the boot. At a closer glance you will see a slight opening on the badge, hook goes in, badge comes out. So no need to take the wheel off.

I think that's right anyway

Wheel centres will only come out by removing the wheel and knocking them out from behind.

Or putting a screw into them and pulling them out! But that obviously damages them.

I had mine replaced under warranty, when I signed the job sheet they said one of their Tech's has made a tool specially to get them out. I didn't get to see it but guessing it could be a hook or a plunger. so they probably not too bothered about damaging them. It took them nearly 10 minutes and it was done with the wheels on.

If it's a warranty replacement job then they probably didn't care about the state of the ones being removed.

I can't see a way of getting them out without removing the wheel or putting something into the cap.

It MAY be possible to get the sharp edge of a carpenters chisel (just don't tell the carpenter) under the lip of the badge.

It may, however, initiate corrosion if you still want to use it.

As previous from KB the easiest way of doing tjis without risking marking your alloys is to knock them out from behind with a wooden drift. If you don't want to keep them then drilling a hole in the centre and putting a self tapping screw in the hole then pulling on that with a pair of pliers is another option though I've not tried that one myself. There's a metal circular spring hoop towards the back of the cap that helps hold it in place so which could prove a problem if you try and prise it off under the edges.

That's how I did mine after forgetting to ask the tyre fitters to knock the out when I had new tyres fitted. They suggested putting a small hole in the 'eye' of the bird on the green logo, putting a screw in and pulling.

The old ones on my Yeti did not have a metal ring in them (I believe my Octavia Mk2 pre-FL did though) and the new wheel centres with new logo don't have the metal ring either.

The new ones I had were very  tight to get in the wheels and needed a good thump with the butt of my hand once I was sure I had them lined up straight.

I've not tried this but I throw it in for discussion. What about one of the small tools for pulling dents out by using a sucker?

Fred

I tried that (or something similar) but due to the surface changes in the wheel centre the rubber sucker couldn't create a vacuum.

That's not to say that a stronger rubber puller than I had available might work.

There is a tool supplied that you may have overlooked.

There is nowhere to get that behind to pull the caps off.
I believe that is to hook wheel trims of on non alloy wheel cars.

The hook is also used for removing the grills to access front fog lamp bulbs on the F/L models.

Or for pulling off wheel nut bolts that have a hole in the centre (like many VW ones do).

Any good for getting stones out of horses hoofs?

Quite unusual for a Yeti Forum thread...

I haven't quite understood why anyone would want to remove the centre caps with the wheels still on? I'm off to Bobs corner and-thanks for the tip will take my own bottle of malt!

Yup have to concur - wheel off, and knock 'em out from the inside (I use the handle of my trolley jack).

When fitting new ones found it best to put them in bucket of very warm water ,and a tiny bit of grease on the wheel and they pop in easy, might help.
