Your opinions on PELA 6000 engine oil extraction pump

Seriously looking at the Pela 6000 engine oil extraction pump..has anyone had good results on your MK1 Fabia VRS ?

 

I recently bought a hand-held pump which needed continuous pulling on suction lever, after 1 minute my shoulders were aching like blazes.

I had found the biggest clear plastic pipe to be 8mm (outer diameter) that would slide down through dipstick pipe into sump, but after shoving in nearly one and a halve metres, didn't seem to reach the bottom of sump.

 I only drew out about 2 litres before sucking air..had to get neighbour to jack car-up and support, drop engine under-tray+sump plug to remove remainder 2 litres etc from sump.

 

Has the Pela 6000 a more rigid (perhaps bigger/longer) pipe to slide down dipstick pipe where it hits the base of sump and won't start to curl upwards ?

 

Another make of pump perhaps considered, (price is important) but it would need to have a constant vacuum for me to operate.

 

Crawling around under car was OK in the past, and do enjoy doing what I can in a yearly service, these latter years.

 

Views very much appreciated, with any constructive advice.

I'd never use one myself, I want any sludge at the bottom of the sump to come out with the old oil, not sit there and build up, oil change after oil change.

 

I have no idea what the issue is with removing a sump plug and letting it drain while getting on and doing other service work on the car, this Pela pump seems like a solution in search of a problem, no professional mechanic would ever dream of using such a product.

 

Edit: FORTY BLEEDING QUID!!! You can pay someone to do it for you for far less than that.

As entered 'sepulchrave' have great trouble getting down and around crawling on floor so is a no-go area, for me, if you read my entry thread..

 

Also I am not a professional mechanic, never have been, and too darn late to become one.

 

Your lucky to be in a position of crawling around for now,( sorry), give it time that will all change..LOL

The Pela does indeed have a stiff extractor pipe. It's the same sort of construction (probably actually the same thing) as a Bowden cable, minus the inner wire, like on bicycle brakes. It's still possible to bend it round if you push really hard, but basically you'll hear it tap the bottom of the sump when it gets there.  It's best not to tap the end on the bottom of the sump enthusiastically, as any 'plated on' solid residues may get broken up and released into the bulk oil if you do.

 

Mine holds vacuum well, so you only have to pump for 30 seconds to empty the sump. It is slow though, even with hot oil, because the inner diameter of the extractor pipe is rather narrow.  Plenty of time to change the oil and air filters while its doing its work. 

 

Pipe is too fat for my Polo and the Fabia though, so it can only get used on the Golf now.

I have this item. I found the extraction pipe goes all the way down to the sump no problems.

I find for best results get the engine warm then obviously turn off. Then pump until the oil starts to drain.then pump a further 5times to keep the pressure up. Sit back and relax for 10mins.repeat another 5pumps so in total you this 3or 4 times.

You get dont get dirty. Your not crawling under vehicle

I do 3 oil changes a year atleast one oil change a year i do via the sump plug to clear away the crud

Not everyone has ramps.

I did consider getting the 12v operated extractor which would prob do better tho

Ha, my legs are shot to pieces, waiting for another knee op. even as we speak, luckily I don't use my legs because I bung someone a drink to do it for me.

Funnily enough used one today for the first time and my first ever oil and filter change that I have attempted.

It was very easy to do and I extracted the full 4.3 litres. (I think that's the capacity for the vrs)

I went for a 10 minute drive to warm the oil up then went for it.

It only took me 30 minutes from start to finish which I didn't think was bad for my first attempt.

I've got a pela 6000,  had it probably 7-9years now.

 

Works perfectly on my Fabia 1.9TDI 100bhp.    The suction tube seems to go very very far down the dipstick tube,  but u only need to measure it up to your dipstick and push it in the same length.

 

Also good for sucking out the remains of oil inside the oil filter housing. There is quite a bit to be got out of there.    I always fill up a litre back into the oil filter housing when refilling after using pela pump.

 

 

I use VW507.00 rated oil.  Bought this car with 70,000miles on it.  It's now done over 142,000 now.   change the oil myself every 12months or 10,000 miles (used to do it more often when I was doing 20,000miles a year, but now I just stick to 1yr/10,000miles)

 

Touch wood, still original turbo (and clutch).  Remapped too.

I guess you hit bottom and then it curved back up   hence the 2 ltrs   I've had one for years and the first job on any "new" car is to  suck the oil out then remove the sump plug to check what's left   my Ibiza pd had approx.  a tablespoon of oil left which is nothing compared to the  large amount sucked out of the filter housing   the only "failure" so far is  1.6 Renault megane     you can "fish" for the last bit by listening for the sucking noise from the sump ------I think I just typed this in the wrong place sorry :no:

No, but it is good practice to remove the excess from the filter housing at the same time.

I've always been tempted by one of these. Read nothing but good reviews.

 

It makes changing the oil a breeze. Saves faffing about having to jack the car up for one!

Sealey TP69 is better than Pela 6000, as you can truly pump it single handed without dismantling the pump/bottle joint. I had Pela prior to Sealey and although Pela did the job, Sealey is better.

 

Do not worry about sludge etc, so long as the oil is warm, all will come out, plus you can get more by vacuuming oil filter housing afterwards.
