Buckled Themisto repair?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, just had all my wheels balanced on my car as I could feel something wasn't right with the ride, amazingly 3 out of the 4 were out of balance, one rear by 60 grams! This has sorted the horrid ride but whilst they were being balanced one if my rears was found to have a slight buckle in it! The tyre place sudgested just running it and see how it goes as it a small buckle, is this a good idea?

Has anyone had a buckle wheel repaired and if so how much is the cost roughly?

Also can anyone in the Leicester area recommend a good wheel repairers?

Cheers all.

New wheels are about £165 from http://www.skodaparts.com/product/superb-themisto-alloy-wheel-18-inch-2008-2013-21074

I have never heard of repairs to buckled alloy wheels, but I guess one can always learn. Other posts quote up to £80 for a repair and re-laquer after "curbing", so I would guess any straightening task (if feasible!) would be more expensive. Personally, I'd pay the £165!

I've just looked it up on the net and it is possible to repair buckled wheel, just no costs quoted!

my other problem is my Themisto's are 7 years old and were badly corroded, so much so I had them sprayed last year so they no longer have the diamond cut finish! So I'd have to pay £50 on top to make it look the same!

Buckled alloys are easily repaired, it is common practice.

I noticed these Thermisto's appear on eBay recently, one of the pictures shows a recent repair on a crack, I'm no expert but I'd expect a bit of a cleaner finish to the weld than this?

I stand corrected re repairs, but having seen the work required to remove a buckle especially the amount of heat put into the metal, I am not convinced that repaired wheels would still have the same strength as they had previously.

Took it in to an alloy wheel specialist, gonna cost about £50, they showed me how they do it with a rotating jig, a hydraulic jack and if need a propane torch, they also said it won't affect the integrity of the wheel in anyway, they do loads a week so they should know otherwise there's lots of cars out there with inferior wheels!

Perhaps you should find the big hole you went down (take some photos) and make a claim against the council for the appalling state of our roads, with all the money the DVLA are getting now for the road tax (when you sell and reclaim Road tax and when the new buyer re-taxes it for the same month) the roads should soon be in the condition they are in France & Germany.

I wish I could, I vaguely remember hitting a pothole, I remember the road being badly worn on the passenger side but I can't remember the bloody road, when or ehere I was going! Lol
