Speedometer dials

Featured Replies

Hi all, thanks for your help in advance.

Ive a 2013 Skoda Rapid (1.6 TDI elegance) which is currently registered in Ireland and as such as a speedometer dial in kmh only. Im emigrating to the UK in august and would like to bring the car with me as I'm very happy with it and don't particularly want to go through the hassle of selling it. One of the requirements for registering it in the UK is that the speedo should read in mph. Im just wondering if it's possible to just change the dial background on the speedo or will the whole instrument have to be changed? Can anyone give me a guideline price as to how much either options would be? TBH i have no idea what i'm doing and i'm worried that i'm going to be fobbed off with the most expensive option by a dealer when there may be better options, hence why I'm asking you guys!

Many thanks.

I don't know anything about the UK legislation, but if you have the Maxidot MFD, you can enable the Alt. Speed from the settings menu and display speed in mph on the digital screen, if this can fulfil the requirement.

Instrument panels are very expensive to buy (EUR526 without VAT as per ETKA) and will need installation and coding by a specialist garage. Changing only the dial as you imply is not possible as it is not sold separately.

As a side comment, I believe that metrication of the UK should have included road signs and vehicles.

yes thats right , there is a Toledo owner from Ireland on here called techie who told me about this MPH display before.

I believe that digital MPH will be Ok for UK reg as long as it cannot be turned off (which it can't if it's in the same place as my Yeti's KMH display).

Cheers

I thought the digital display of the speed indicator (shown circled in the pic below) cannot be changed and/or has to read km for UK models?

Not sure about the actual dial, how that could be changed?

Chris has just changed his to big MPH.

See the Carista thread.

Yes - very easy to do with Carista, just change the car region to Australia. It still retains the option to display the speed digitally in either MPH or KPH as desired. If you have a car with KPH-only dials, using the MFD to display the MPH speed (either small or large), will make the car legal for UK roads.

In fact, here's a video of it set up:
