Advice regarding buying a Superb

Hi Briskoda members. I would like to ask an advice regarding buying Skoda Superb

 

I currently have Fabia 1.2 Ambient and after I have seen Superb inside I absolutely loved it.

 

Now as I dont change cars as often I`m thinking to get 2.0 CR 140 Elegance manual  90-100k miles one which should last me for about 8 years.

 

I have read a lot on this forum that at around 100k mileage you need to replace the water pump and cambelt  plus full service history is a must.

I know many people around me who had cars over 100k miles with no problem (actually I know one with 1.4 TDi Roomster who done 350k with no problem)

 

But everywhere I look I see cars getting sold mostly around 100k miles? 

 

Is this where the problems starts with this car/engine? or are the people just selling them because the value drops so much?

No, there are no real issues that emerge at that mileage.  I think 100K miles can be a psychological point for many to move the car on and generally values start to drop more once it hits this mileage.  Search this forum and you will see many threads on cam belt change intervals.  It does vary according to year of manufacture etc but generally it would be done around that mileage.  FSH from a Skoda/VAG dealer would be the main thing as far as I'm concerned.

 

Remember 100K miles on a well maintained diesel is nothing really and the 2.0 tdi CR engines should be good for 250/300K miles plus if well looked after. In fact, I would be wary of a diesel car with low mileage as it may not have been driven to the optimal for a diesel i.e. not brought up to full temperature often enough and driven at higher motorway speeds which will impact on the DPF and other engine parts.  Just watch for newer cars with high miles that may not have been well looked after, such as fleet cars / taxis (most are well maintained to be fair so I'm not painting all with the same brush!).

The engine,if serviced correctly would be my last worry.

 

But remember,the rest of the car will have 100k wear & tear,often not noticed on a test drive.

 

For research I use cargiant (a London car supermarket) to compare prices and to see whats available.

The 140 is very popular with the taxi people,so you have competition already.

I`m planing to spend about 7.5k + my car as part exchange or might sell to car buying companies.

 

I do understand about wear and tear but I had my car for 5 years its 07 reg with 65k miles and to me inside its very good. I`m happy to accept that the car will be worn just cannot resist the look and feel of superb elegance :)

 

Do you think the fact that new model is comming out this summer would it affect used market of previous model?

Yes, MKII residuals are already being affected with the imminent UK launch of the MKIII, so you may well want to hold on until they settle. Your philosophy seems to be similar to mine; I rather hope our 2011 MKII gives us plenty of trouble-free service over the next 8 to 10 years, and I cant worry about RV's....  :thumbup:   

My mk2 has just hit 100k but you wouldn't necessarily know to look at it.

The majority at that mileage, and around 4-5 years old, will be ex fleet cars maintained money no object, however some may not have been looked after in terms of interior or exterior condition.

My mk2 140 was on 80k when I bought it. It was an ex lease car. I looked at 4. One on similar mileage was in horrendous condition, dsg gaitor and knob all scratched/worn. Bolsters worn, scratches all over bodywork, edges of doors damaged etc. all tell tail signs of an unloved car. Mine however on 80k looked mint, genuinely immaculate interior, only one wheel curbed on exterior etc. buy on condition regaurdless of mileage.

If you're interested, I have a low mileage Superb 170tdi 4x4 manual (twindoor) for sale...30k miles on a 12 plate.

My (company car) 170TDI elegance on a 62 plate has now done 115k and is running better than ever - I would be happy to buy it!

A lot of those miles are on motorways at 70-80MPH, the engine isn't working too hard.

It has full Skoda dealer service history and despite being owned by Arval, not me, has been looked after.

The firm I work for runs cars for 3 years irrespective of mileage, then replaces them, most will have done around 100k.

The wife's car (not a Skoda!) has only done 40k over 7 years and has had far more problems.
