Fitting new door lock mechanism does it need coded?

Featured Replies

Got my car in at dealers and they are saying the new lock mechanism needs coded, I don't think this is the case and they are taking me for a ride?

If you mean a door lock mechanism as below, then no it doesn't need coding.

Well I've experience an odd thing when I replaced my passenger door lock mechanism a few years back. My central locking system seemed to go out of sync and I've never sorted it.

Basically, if I unlock the drivers door with the remote, the passenger one opens as well when only the drivers door should open. If I lock the car and press lock again, the passenger door unlocks! If I lock the car from inside using the switch on the door, all the doors lock but the passenger one reopens. Its really messed up and no one on this forum has managed to find a solution when I posted about in the past. I also tried 2 other lock mechanisms (1 brand new none oem and the other from a golf) and they all do it.

So I don't know if somethings needs sorting in the software. I have VAG com lite but for some reason it cannot access the central locking section.

If you are trying to access Central Locking (35) you won't be able to. The Fabia is Convenience (46).

The door lock unit has no control unit so will not need to be coded.

So Tech1e, would you have any idea why the new lock would behave this way? I'm not the only person that has had this issue bit it seems that there isn't a solution. Could it be that the mechanism isn't 100% compatible even though it's physical identical?

Is it the same part number?

Yeah I believe so. I might have the one I took off at home so I'll check.

The mechanism I used was none oem - made by LST, with the code 3B1837015AM. As far as I can find out, the code is correct for the Fabia VRS passenger door mechanism, however, I'm unsure about the last two digits.

I tried two of these from LST, both operated as I described above. I then got one that came from a VW Golf with the same part number (again, unsure about the last two digits) & this operated in the same manner as well.

The third digit being a 1 may be your problem.

Don't know what year your car is, but I don't think it matters in this case.

Look at this page which happens to be for a 2005 car. Presuming your car has remote central locking, the part number you want is the ninth one down, 3B2837015AM. Note that this suits the left (passenger) side of a right hand drive car. See how all the part numbers for rhd cars have a 2 as the 3rd digit, and all the lhd parts have a 1?

Are you buying from a Europe mainland based ebay source by any chance?

I have a few genuine door locks available pm me the numbers and I could match it up would have saved you a fortune

My front passenger lock deadlocked and i had to replace it.

I have replaced it with a new one i bought from Ebay and it appears to be working, but when i lock or unlock using the central locking it doesnt work as it should.

I notified the seller and he was apologetic and has sent me through a replacement. I have only rec it today and havent had a chance to swap it as yet.

I'll hopefully get some time tomorrow to do this and update this thread.

thanks

Pedro

I'm really interested in getting my issue sorted however, the original door lock got binned & I have no idea what the code for it was. I do recollect that it did match the one I got off ebay, but it was 2 or so years ago.

If I phone a dealership & give them my chassis number, can they get the right part number for my car?

Yes, they should be able to help, but may not wish to tell you the part number if they think you aren't going to buy from them. What year is it?

Thats really interesting. That might make a bit of sense, as it might confuse the system if the passenger door thinks its actually a drivers door, hence the sync issues.

Thanks for the info.

Same part number comes up for 2003. This time it's the tenth one down the list.

Yeah ring the dealers for your part number. Just act like you're pricing it up to buy when you get paid and ask for the part number so you don't have to go through everything again 'when' you order one.

I did this, however, the part number the dealer gave me differed slightly to what was on the lock anyway!

Which is probably will. Parts get updated and when that happens the number will normally change.

When fitting these parts it is crucial that they are compatible. Just because the part number partially matches doesn't mean its suitable.

I've emailed Skodaparts.com & supplied them with my VIN number & Reg, They just email me back & also confirm that the lock mech for my car should be 3B2837015AM.

Hopefully, fitting a new lock with this part number will solve all my central locking sync issues.

Steveopc - I've sent you a PM. :)

:sun:

A new lock with that part number will work (unless the fault is elsewhere, which I doubt), but that doesn't mean another part number such as steveopc may have, won't.

As Tech1e says, parts are superceded all the time, so there's a fair chance the (if original) ones steve has may be different part number. As long as they're not off an older car than yours, and have a 2 as the third digit, you should be OK.

New one will likely have a longer future, clearly, but cost will be proportionately more.
