Laptop screen cracked..worth repairing?

Featured Replies

Youngest let her walkman fall onto her closed laptop, which has resulted in the screen cracking (less than happy). Is this worth repairing, and if so any suggested reliable places of repair? Or should this be estimate and insurance replacement time?

Cheers guys

Depending on age, the cost to repair could be as much as buying a new laptop. The screen is the most expensive part.

However you could just bung a normal monitor in the back and carry on using it.

It's quite a fiddly job to do. I only know this because I dismantled a non-functioning laptop to photograph all the bits for lessons. The screen was a nightmare to disconnect without breaking the connectors.

I have to agree with Manny that the screen is by far the most expensive bit. Might be worth you letting us know the spec but in the meantime the monitor socket will work well.

We did have a student return a cracked screen once and we used the machine for at least 12 months afterwards on the network through VNC and monitors without a problem.

OUCH!!!

What size is the screen? Is it normal ratio or widescreen?

Following on from my previous thread I would expect it would need an hour for someone who knows what they're doing to fit it.

i'd do an insurancy thing for accidental damage, yes lap top screens are a btich to remove and put back because of the bits that keep the tight movement to stop it from flopping!

15" normal ratio.

The spares will be expensive. It's not actually hard to fit, but be careful because there's a high voltage supply for the screen - usually along the bottom. At the age you say it is, I'd be claiming on the insurance.

Did you buy it on credit card? Some cards have accidental damage etc insurance on purchases.... four months might be pushing it though, but worth a go....

a screen for this will be about

Insurance job if possible , but it may be worth speaking to Paul at www.itdealers.co.uk who do repairs at quite civilised prices

Going to claim on the house insurance as accidental damage.
