Turbo - noise

Featured Replies

So i thought i had a boost leak, but ive been over my pipes top and bottom 4 times, not sign of leaks no oil, everything is tight, no black smoke - its all diy stainless and silicon.

 - Turbo wizz noise has increased, got louder, but the note remains the same.

 - Turbo seems to be over working, making loads of noise but delivering little power.

 - Then turning ignition off, there is a realise of air/ pressure

It feels like a boost leak, with the lack of power, but no smoke,

If i must.. :P i will try tomorrow, will have to see what i have to record hmmmm

have you checked the intercooler, the plastic shroud has a habit of rubbing and wearing holes in the bottom right of the cooling channels.

Have you whipped the TIP off, looked at the impeller and checked play and endfloat?

Yes not this

No i have no idea how, or what it should/ shouldnt do :P

The TIP is short for turbo intake pipe.

It's fairly easily to remove, depending where the clip is from when it was last removed.

I managed to remove mine no problem.

Remove the clips from the air box.

Remove the 10mm bolt from the inlet manifold.

Remove the 10mm from down the left of it.

Remove the clip from the turbo.

You can then check for play in the turbo shaft and have a feel of the edge of the blades to check they are still smooth.

I find a set of mole grips best for undoing the clip. But it can be a nightmare if the clips in an awkward place.

It's ideal for the turbo intake pipe clips, can get them at any angle.

Better than jacking the car up and removing trays and covers anyway!

Ok am i right in thinking this is to be done from underneath?

And its the small silicon part with two clips, im guessing even removed i wont be able to see much due to the small gap, so its a judgement via feel .. maybe hard for me to gauge without knowing what a perfect one should feel like?

It can be done from the top or bottom, just depends where the clips are and what tools you have. Mine is a snap-on version and was about £50 I think. The hand held one was about £16.

Yes it's pure judgment, if you don't know what your looking for you won't notice much, but as said, it should spin free with no force needed. The edge of the blades should be smooth. The bearings should have very little play.

HYBRID TURBO forsale in forsale section

Remove the aluminium pipe from the air box to the turbo. Then you can stick your hand in and feel the play and take a picture of the compressor to check. I found this when I checked my turbo

My car made a different noise when I pulled off from some traffic lights, loss of power. Had it checked turbo had gone, when removed shaft had dropped a little and impeller was damaged on the edges. All up and running now. Haven't got the sound of a build up of pressure when accelerating too.

How much is a turbo rebuild roughly these days? Do many places do a discount for 2?

About £150 including pickup from address and deliverd back to you.

who do you use, ive been seeing online quotes of £250

Sorry, I jumped ahead of myself!

To replace that wheel and balance it would be £150.

To replace a full cartridge basically all besrings, seals, wheels and balance is about £250.

That's from CR Turbos.

So basically not worth it on a standard turbo aka kkk, worth it if you have already got a hybrid etc

Exactly yeah.

hybrid in forsale section £50 cheaper than it is on ebay
