5th Gear - Fiesta ST

Featured Replies

Tiff is blatting round the track in a Fiesta ST. Sounds really nice... I find it hard to believe a diesel hot hatch could sing like that.

Sadly the small Mitsi diddnt fare so well.

One thing though, ditch the stripes, Ford !

It sings well with a blueflame exhaust fitted, and not a stripe in sight ;)

Bugger - completely forgot it was on tonight. Oh well

I must admit I rather like the Fiesta ST, looks like a little cracker - I've even warmed to the stripes :sofahide:

Can't see a standard Fab vRS beating it tbh...

Personally I wouldnt be seen dead in it. IMO of course. Perhaps I'm too old for it. I wonder what the mpg is like. Would you trade your Fabia vRs in for one ?...... er..... NO!

I agree. Its a c h a v chariot. The only cars worthy of Cobra stripes, are........... Cobra's.

Ah, the true measure of a performance car :rofl:

Wouldn't say I would trade the Furby for it, however I think they have made a good job of it.

No thanks! I rather have the Furby. I couldn't aFORD a fiesta! Boom Boom!

Thats because its a 2.0-litre petrol, not a diesel ;)

They made me think of a Viper myself - well, an attempt at a Viper

The GT40 did have stripes, and it worked with that I think. But a supermini? Err.... no.

So it's GT40, Viper, 360 Stradele and Cobra in the allowed stripes club I think :D

The three main things that drew me into buying the Fabia were :

1. The performance

2. The MPG

3. The build quality

How many of these apply to the Fiesta ST?

Certainly not the last two

He didnt mean that did he. He is of course refering to the Fabia sounding like that!!

Aye Viper stripes should stay on a Viper!!

I saw a local Driving School is using this ST.............unless those stripes were fake.

Having a bit of fun with an ST between a couple of roundabouts the other night and was reeling hin in on the straights, but only by a little (a bit of give and take as each engine got into its stride and then needed to change up. Other thing is the noise, the one I drove was really very noisy, and the Ford 2 litre is far from nice sounding. See the Fabia vRS time from the previous series just a little further down the 5th gear board. Fiesta probably handles better at / over the limit.

Ont the subject of Ford, had a look at a mates brand new Focus Tianium tonight. Excellent interior fit finitsh and layout. Still rather have me Fabia vRS though.

The MPG wont be as good as a Furby.

The build quality isnt likely to be as good either.

You dont exactly need to drive one to find this out...

the stripes are an option, so that's the dodgy image sorted. the mpg thing isn't really an issue if your in the market for a proper hot hatch. as for the build quality, if you're going on reputations from the past, what's the heated rear screen on a skoda for...?

Fact is, out of the box, the Fiesta ST is a better small hot hatch than the Fabia vRS and the new Focus ST is a better mid-sized hot hatch than the Octavia vRS.

:iagree:

pandy's focus is 2 years older than my octavia and the only real difference in build quality between that and mine is maybe one or two more rattles than mine, same for the focus that i owned before my octavia.

Indeed, it does better at the traditional hot hatch qualities. I believe though that skoda are trying to offer something different with their cars, nothing quite so focused (forgive the pun) and maybe easier to live with day to day... I'd say they succeeded with that.

I agree though, if we are looking at out and out thrills, the vRS's (of any description) are not the best choice. Neither is the Fiesta ST though... the Clio 182 seriously outdoes it...

When you say better, you mean a bit quicker in balls out driving?

In many ways, the Fiesta is not as good. Fuel goes without saying, but if you need to use the car for commuting and motorway work as well, the Fiesta will give you a headache (I did test drive one). Also, cross country, the Ford may have the edge if you cane it, but the Skoda will cover ground in a more relaxed way at 8/10ths and be just as quick / entertaining, without the row.

If you want a nutter car, the Fiesta falls short of the competition from Renault or the Mini Cooper S.

The Fabia vRS gives a unique blend of economy, comfort and pace that no other manufacturer seems to have equalled yet. So if outright performance is your sole goal, then I expect the Fiesta would be a very little better, but factor in other aspects and the Fabia is more likely the "better" car.
