Anything better than the Fabia VRS?

Featured Replies

I have recently moved house and my commute has changed from 16 miles of motorway (and half a mile of slip roads) to 25 miles of almost empty, twisty B roads. The economy on the VRS has fallen from 50-55mpg to ~45mpg and these twisty roads are showing up how heavy the Fabia is. The Fabia is also coming up to two years and although absolutely nothing wrong with it I wouldn

Two bikes.

If getting less than 45mpg is a problem for you I can only really suggest a bus or a push bike.

Got to have four wheels.

That's why I said two push bikes.

Skateboard? :D

3 series diesel if you can get one for your budget.

a moped

Apparently the Focus CMAX is very economical and will even out handle the Fabia on those open B roads.

fiesta ST?

a roller skate?

apparently lawn mowers get good mpg

depends on how much you want to spend!

I hear the Fiesta ST is very good, better than the fabia :P

But really I there is alot out there that could tick a few of them boxes just need to get out there and test them all! ;)

I must admit 45mpg is rather good, so that leaves you with two pushbikes as Andy said

Ah but I've heard that the fuel consumption isn't as good! ;)

Golf Mk5 1.4 SuperTurbo?

to be fair my furby does better on a long twist B road than it does on the motorway for fuel or maybe it's just my lack of driving skill

I think you will be pushed to get 45+ from a petrol that has a good amount of poke. Possibly a Peugeot 206 GTi, Clio 182, Seat Ibiza Cupra?

Ibiza TDi Cupra?

Nope, can't think of anything!.

Forget 45mpg just get an older Octy vRS ;-) failing that why not a diesel Octy?

Back home now after the twisty B roads, actually got 49mpg on the way back! Not only is it very twisty but there's also a lot of gradients. Corners on crests of small hill, I think it's the rapid gradients that are upsetting the Fabia (I'm putting it down to weight and less that ideal suspension) although it is good at accelerating up them.

Unimpressed with the options you guys have thrown up so far! The BMW might be an option as a company car but seem expensive 2nd hand

Toyota MR2 Mk3

If you are after something like that why not look at the MX5, it's more reliable than the MRS.

On a twisty road with 60 mph speed limit it won't be too great on fuel economy in most cars. I have a feeling most petrols wouldnt stay near those figures (footnote: I've got a Fab vRS and I get it down to lower 30s if I try to make progress whilst sticking to the speed limit on those types of road).

My average mpg tends to vary between 40-45 on most days, so not too bad.

If you want to save fuel, don't accelerate going uphill, just start off a little fast and let it drop down 1..2 mph whilst you go up it, then let it creep back up again going downhill. Won't slow ya down much, but it will easily show up as 10 mpg more ;)

For me, it depends on what mood I'm in - sometimes a little trashing is great fun, and then the MPG thing isnt as important, other times I am in no hurry and MPG is on :)

Maybe I don't mean the Mk3... I mean the very latest one. Are they unreliable?

That's the one what I am on about the MRS. The MX5 is a far better car than it.

The interior of an MX5 isnt that great, assuming you're thinking of an earlier car. I'd love one as a weekender but day to day?
