Anything better than the Fabia VRS?

Featured Replies

Why not? As long as you dont mind only two seats, I cant see the problem with an MX5 as a daily driver. The interior isn't that bad either...

And you can get a hard top for it.

TBH your going to be pushed to find anything that has the performance of the Fabia along with the economy, well at least, hard pushed to find anything that has that AND is significantly different.

Edit: A C2 VTS is 1083 kg ??    its the size of a matchbox, what the hell do they put in it? lead?

Eibachs - 150, big brakes - 225, remap 300 - the drive home, priceless.;)

I cant see any other car giving you that economy on a spirited drive home. I get 18mpg if i go down the lanes.

That's my view - a remap will give you better mpg plus you wont have to become a member of any hair dressing forums.

Smart Roadster

Not particularly fast, but sharp handling and 55mpg combined. High 'fun' factor' .Cheap road tax too.

Trike and side-car?

:finger::rofl:

The interior of an MX5 isnt that great, assuming you're thinking of an earlier car. I'd love one as a weekender but day to day?

What!!! The non pop up head light MX5 is a bloody reliable car. Mazda's build quality is better than Skoda, and the interior is sweet. I was thinking of getting a 5 myself but sensibility took over  One day I will have one

Those are the kind of characteristics I'm after... handling is more important that absolute power/speed.

The Smart roadster does look, er smart lol.

Shifty is right, why not keep the furby, spend a little money as above and believe me it will transform the car from jack of all trades to master of most!!

I've done the above, apart from the brakes which are on the wish list, I can honestly say that Furby vRS with relatively cheap mods give me as much pleasure as owning an BMW M3, which was always a dream car for me!!

Try it, you won't believ how different it makes the car plus I get better mpg assuming I'm not driving like a lunatic! ;)

My vRS replaced a Smart roadster, it was a fun car when you are in the mood but to be honest pretty tiring when not, not good at all for long journeys. Had quite a few problems in 5,000 miles nothing too serious but they are very flimsy. As an all rounder I think that the Fabia takes some beating!

I agree with the points above that nothing would match it after a remap etc. Mine is standard and I have driven many cars and the Furby always makes me smile. Wife just got an MR2 MK3. Great fun to drive but performance and economy not even close to Furby.

Only thing I can think of is to get a PD100 instead of the vRS.

If you're constantly changing direction, altitude and speed, having to accelerate less mass is one way to lower fuel consuption.

Other options would be a 1.4TDi PD Arosa or similar. Pref. remapped.

After a whole week I'm no longer too concerned about the fuel, the VRS is still getting closer to 50 then 45... no problems there. I think the only concern is the actual handling - what can be done with things like front strut brace, different tyres or different suspension components. Is there a beginners guide to improving the Fabia VRSs handling anywhere?

I'm in a similar position. About to change jobs and give back my company car (Laguna DCi) and now need to buy my own car. As my commute is only likely to be 20 miles in city traffic I'm not too concerned about it being a diesel. So far we've test driven a Focus ST170 and a Octy vRS, both were quick but in a different way to our Furby vRS.

As we've got our first child due in a few months we want something bigger than the Furby but still fun to drive.

I'm going to look at a Focus TDCi 115 Zetec and see how this compares and then look to see how much it would be to remap it !!!

PD100 would definitely be more economical, and it's not really all that slow. It has more body roll but more smooth suspension wise :)

Change just the springs, HUGE improvement and I think many will agree, changes the whole feel of the car

Lupo GTi ?

Neither the MR2 nor the VTS will touch the fab on a gradient. Go for sorting the handling or buying something decent instead of silly girly cars.

What would you call decent without costing twice as much as a two year old Fabia VRS or only getting 35 mpg if I'm lucky?

Where abuots are you clv101? PM if you like>?

clv, if you're near bristol, we could meet up one day and have a drive around in mine if you like as mine's a fabia vrs with:

eibach springs, koni dampers, milltek full exhaust, brembo 4pot calipers GT 323mm brakes, seat sport momo strut brace, FMIC, Remap (but before FMIC added so not taking that into account).

On the way over to IP in Kent, between 60-70mph on the motorway (M4, M25), I averaged out at 59.0mpg by the time I got there.

Whilst it's one of the more modded fabias around, it will give an idea of what all of the suggestions above combined give you :)

Tell me more about these eibach springs. So what's the process? I've never modified a car at all, do I need to buy the springs from a company on line then take them to any old garage? Does it have to be a special garage? What do Skoda think of it, I still have one year's warranty left to run? Are there any side effects, like extra tyre wear, dampers not being up to the job or the rest of the car shaking to bits!

What sort of costs are we talking about for the springs and fitting?

I am near Bristol, I work at the M4/M5 junction and live in South Wales. tfboy thanks for the offer, sounds like you've done a lot to yours!! It would be good to see what the potential of the little VRS is.

Tried one of these this afternoon and was very impressed.

The Bora's an idea... What's the best value car with the 150PD engine? The Seat Toledo I guess?

  • Author

Here are like for like comparisons from Parkers.co.uk. Even if the magnitudes are a bit out the relative differences should be reasonably accurate. Looks like Seats are cheaper than VWs and the saloons are cheaper than hatches making the Toledo the pick of the bunch. How does the 150PD Toledo compare to the 150PD Leon Curpa equipment wise? The price also suggests that a straight swap (value wise) for equivalent age/mileage 150PD Toledos and Fabia VRS might be possible after a couple of years.
