The only one I can find goes back to January, when they then said MkII was a better choice than the Passat.

I read it today in my weekly copy. Very impressive I must say. I have been talking with several people at my dealer who have been to Vienna and Sardinia for trials with the new Superb and they were I think as you would suspect very impressed.

One of the points Auto Express made was the quality of the fit, finish and materials used was equal to the Passat.

Looking at the pics in Autoexpress, the Passat looks rather plain next to the SuperB, especially from the rear.

Looks very Volkswagen (classy) compared to the Skoda and less origami.

Choices are usually a good thing.

Surely this isn't what VAG want??? Yes they want it to do well just not beat down the Passat and me named Family Car of the Year over the Passat.

 

These things can be misleading - they are not saying the Superb is a better car than the Passat, more taking into account space, value & economy the Superb is better value - but people see Skoda beats VW which makes it trickier for the marketing guys at VW to justify the higher priced VW range

VW don't work like that. Look at their Motorsport. Audi and Porsche both in Le Mans, R8 V10+ v Gallardo/Huracan etc. they want competition between their manufactures. Even if Skoda pinch sales off VW, the profits are still coming in-house.

More expensive, but by all accounts the better car if you dont need a hatch. Well, unless you really must carry 8 feet passengers in the back!!

hmmm.. If a VAG is competing with a VAG then both have to step up their game... which then leads to non-VAGs to up their own games because VAGs are getting ahead... ultimately, everybody wins... manufacturers and drivers!?

Superb vs Passat... and the winner is... drum roll..... who cares? Buy what you like, not what some arbitary comparisson suggests. Plus, as has been pointed out it's an own goal. VAG vs. VAG - hmmm. People still buy Passats regardless of what this says. VAG wins whatever, it's good marketing for them.

In ~9 months I will have the same dillema. SIII Combi or B8 Variant. I am aiming at 190 HP AWD in both cases. 220 HP FWD SIII also considered, however I am not sure if I want to have FWD car again.

What I have heard from Passat owners - they are not so convinced that Passat went premium as they claim. Also there are some bugs left (which is considered normal in new model).

I've done a quick price and spec comparison of my preferred option (TDI 190 manual 2WD) and they are pretty close.  The Superb is no longer a value for money option

I agree there. I had a similar look and they are almost like for like pricewise (that's in the Irish market). Residuals will be an important factor for me and I'll be watching them closely over the coming year or two

Having today sat in a SE L Exec, 190 estate I was very impressed and can say that Auto Express's report on quality being equal or better than the Passat is in my humble opinion, true.

The screen size is as big a jump up from the mk2 as the mk2 was from the mk1. Everything is just so nice to touch with the 1/2 leather Alcantara trim also impressing.

Definitely gets the thumbs up from me.

As far as I'm aware, since only one is available with a petrol engine there's no real contest
