Driving in France

Featured Replies

If driving to France and crossing the English Channel by Tunnel or Ferry any time soon,

maybe best ensure you have a Tent, Chairs, Coolbox, plenty of Fuel & Spare Fuel, maybe B&B booked in England,

and take plenty of cash/money,

Sterling will do for the UK.

As previously stated be by Rich no timing between tolls though be careful approaching the tolls near the ports for speed traps, Sanef transponder a must have in the holiday period to fast track the tolls and avoid the queues, the best thing I ever did. Enjoy the trip and safe journeys.

we went via Portsmouth, no problems at all apart from the english motorways. In all it took us 12 hours to travel down but the return trip took 26 hours. M27 blocked and then the next day (we had to stop at a hotel eventually) the M6 was shut too

Going to Dover if Stack is still on, DONT USE M20, cut across to M2 / A2 & come down Jubilee way. However there have been problems with queues at top of Jubliee way getting down to the port.

If you really want to avoid Jubilee way then PM me & I can give you an locals knowledge to get to port, avoiding it.

Going home along M20 will be fine as stack does not affect London bound traffic.

just dont pick any hitchhikers up coming the other way :D

Another way to get to the channel tunnel, use the M2/A2 down to Canterbury go through Canterbury passed the cricket ground on the Old Dover Rd, then turn right onto the B2068 Hythe Road, that will take you down to J11 on the M20.

I came over on Monday. A2/M2 with no traffic until I got to the port and that only added 30 mins. They were managing the traffic at the bottom as it was coming from all directions.

As above, the roads are nice here. People don't hog the lanes which is nice. I've driven through France, Belgium and Holland and not seen any police yet. There appears to be a few types of speed camera (assuming they are) but apparently you can't be dealt with using these due to an EU directive the UK didn't sign up to. This apparently changes in 2017 though. Just be weary of the traffic around you as a lot of people just change lanes without indicating!
