I'm pleased so far with my TomTom Go 700 - and with the regularly updated free speed camera database available from here.

Theres a new system out in the next few weeks (if not already available) called the Navigon (PNA-150).

Uses Teleatlas maps and all of the TomTom plug-in services such as the speed camera database and live traffic info.

All in a bargain

what about the garmin i3 available for

Also theres a new 'Gizmondo', navigator, digital camera, mp3 player, speed camera detector.

See here: http://www.pdamods.com/products.asp?cat=121

Comes with free speed camera database updates for life.

Suggest you look in the forums here for more info www.pocketgps.com.

If you want cameras you will want ones that are regularly updated. So most built in units (either OEM or after market fit) are no use. Your choice is between a stand alone unit (Tom Tom Go, Garmin etc) or a PDA based system or a smart phone based system.

The last two will be more expensive but you get extra bits for your money. You then add in the software - Tom Tom 5 for PDAs or Tom Tom mobile for smartphones for example - and away you go.

You will normally also need a GPS receiver and a car charger and mount, although most if not all the stand alones come with this built in or included in the bundle. Some smartphones and PDAs also come with a built in GPS receiver. If not built in most sat nav receivers nowadays communicate with the PDA/smartphone using bluetooth.

Me I went the whole hog and got an Ipaq PDA with built in mobile phone (not "smartphone") that was not simlocked. Then added a parrot car kit that acts as both phone car kit and sat nav receiver, both via bluetooth. Result as close to a built in sat nav unit as you can get cos the sat nav instructions and camera warnings mute the radio and come through the speakers as does the mobile phone calls. At the same time I can use it as phone and PDA. Most importantly everytime I dock it with the PC it automatically goes on the internet and checks for latest camera info from the site above (which as another post has said is FREE). It can even do this anywhere using the mobile phone's GPRS system but I have not set that up because the camera databases normally only gets updated once a month. Downside - bloody expensive (over
