Higher tickover in warm weather

Featured Replies

Anybody else noticed, my 1.4 TSI with the A/C set to 16 degC and it idells at 950 instead of its usual 700ish, even does it when coasting in Eco Mode, Yes I do use Eco Mode to improve my fuel consumption there, thats scared you hasn't it ?

I find the Eco mode brilliant when travelling far. Its perfect for relaxed cruising. And S-mode is one click away when needed.

Would guess a few cars do this due to the extra strain to run the AC, my old fabia used to and so does the Citigo when the AC is on full blast.

To be fair I'd probably have mine in eco mode for most of my driving.

My vrs runs at higher rpm with the a/c on. Every car i've had with it does, nothing to worry about.

I had to chuckle when I saw this post as I was all set to post the very same thing. The only difference is I've got the 1.6 TDI (DSG) and mostly do just short runs. The first thing I thought when I saw the high tickover at the traffic lights was the dpf was doing a regular passive regen. I tend to do the same as a lot of members do and I took it for a run on the nearby M23. Usually it's completed in 10 miles or so in sport mode.

I couldn't figure out why the tickover was still at 950rpm after 40 odd miles. When I got home and switched off there was no hot exhaust smell and fan running on. I spoke to my local dealer's service manager and the first thing he asked me was did I have the a/c on (yes I did). He suggested going for a run with no a/c running and see what happens. Sure enough the tickover stayed at 750 throughout a 50 mile run.

When just 3 miles from home at the lights, I turned the a/c on and within 5 seconds the tickover went up to 950rpm. I felt a bit silly for not figuring out for myself what was going on. This is one to remember as I was thinking all along that it was a faulty DPF sensor.

Yes due to the power requirement of the air con it does need a higher rev count, especially with requiring the battery to be optimised for stop start.

My Citigo did this and my Rapid does it too with the AC on.

It wants to be a diesel and is having phantom regens.......

Quite amusing reading the 'warm weather' comments especially as I am here in London at the moment.

Slowed trains, heat breaks at Wimbledon and now fast tickovers with a/c and only 35 Deg C.

I return to quite cool weather in Adelaide at the weekend and will miss the warm spell.

The funny thing is I do not remember my tickover increasing when the a/c was on even during 40+ days

My TPM activated yeterday...which I put down to ambient heat + brake generated heat.

These engines have been made as efficient as possible, so there is minimal extra power available when idle. That's why it needs additional revs for AC to cool the car down when it's warmer.

Just the same in the winter when running heated windows and all the heated seats.

Bigger powerdrain resulting in higher revs when idling.
