Speedcams

Featured Replies

After seeing some UK speedcams, I started wondering how do they work?

They do take picture of the rear of the car, yes?

Doesnt the driver need to be indentified for the speedingticket to be valid?

Yeah, the first thing they send to the registered keeper is a form to tell them who was driving.

And if the regiserd owner doesnt know or want to tell?

Then they get the prosecution against their name.

It is a criminal offence in it's own right.

Sorry I couldn't resist it is a bit of a joke :(

I have just checked my Octavia and apparently I got a ticket last month somewhere I have never been and in a day I was lying in bed with a steaming hangover!!!

The info may be wrong so use it with care

So you can actually get fined without evidence?

Well tbh its different over here to in the uk, but my understanding of it in the uk is - you are the registered keeper of a vehicle of a car which is caught speeding. Assumption is you were driving. In order to say "it wasnt me driving" you have to provide details of who was. Failure to provide info can be an obstruction of justice which you will be charged with and the assumption of you driving your vehicle stands.

As i said though this is only my understanding it work differently over here with our "go safe" mobile speed vans.

It's awell known scam site. BUT, if you have been naughty, be carefull/very,very careful ,as there'sa lot of SCP SO CALLED "EXPERT WITNESSES", trollong/trawling motoring sites, looking for those asking for advice to post ,what may be used in a court case as "evidence".

There are also some fixed cameras that take a picture from the front too, though not so many. Then there's the dreaded safety partnership vans that sit in waiting and again take a picture from the front. My boss recieved one from one that takes the picture from the rear a few years ago. He wasn't driving as he was out of the country on holiday and neither of the other named drivers (his kids) would own up. He was threatened with prosecution for failing to name the driver and only got off once he proved he wasn't in the uk at the time of the offence.

Hell yeah!

Down here, if the vehicle is registered in a business name & the business fails to provide the driver details the fine is multiplied (I think it's 5x).

You can ask for a copy of the photo (for a fee).  Worth it for bragging rights if you were doing big speed.

Our cameras mainly take the front of the vehicle but there are some that take the rear.  front photo can be embarrassing for some (wrong passenger).

We have friends who share their speeding fines around the family so they don't lose their licence.  I would have thought 3-6 months on public transport would teach a good lesson.  The parents are otherwise "upstanding members of the community" but they think speeding fines are fair game. :x

A couple of years ago I was talking to the Managing Director of the Company I worked for as I was the Union Rep. We were talking about drivers getting done for speeding and the conversation turned to the Company often getting notifications from the Police and having to say who was the driver.  On this occasion it was one of the Directors and the photographic evidence showed him towing a caravan when he was supposed to be at work visiting various depots in the region!  Whoops.

Over here they vans can do speed measurements front and rear and take photos so there is always a photo of the driver in case of an appeal. A guy tried to say his wife was driving as he had 9points out of 12 already- another 2 for this wouldve been very dodgy. Only accepted it himself when told unless he was married to his own twin that wasnt going to fly - his beard and glasses we clearly visible in the photo.

However - google the irish news for came out recently as to how 100's of drivers were dodging having their points registered against their license... backward doesnt even come close to describing the idiocy of the system....

... backward doesn't even come close to describing the idiocy of the system....

What system is that then?

In what way is it "backward" or "idiotic"?

How would you improve this system?

Did you look up the loop hole i referred to?

Get caught speeding, contest it, go to court, change plea to guilty in front of judge, accept fine.

then have "forgotten" your driving license to present to the clerk of the court for the points to be attached to your electronic driving record...

its being fixed but 100s of people paid their fine but got no points. In one instance a driver shouldve accumulated enough points to lose his license but instead had only 5 because of using this to avoid the rest...

For anyone interested, theres a few types of FIXED cameras, but they can be broken down into those that take a photo from front or rear. There's gatso's which can only take photos from the rear ,Truvelo which can work either rear/forward facing, but whch mainly work to take photos from the front, and a few other types, main of which is Monitron. These ALL take a measurement at one spot. Not to be distinguished from Averge speed cameras, ( mounted on posts over roads ,and reffered to as vultures, due to appearance). These take  the average speedo vehicles between nominated cameras .

I can't understand why there are not many more average speed cameras. The instantaneous fixed speed cameras (GATSO, etc.) seem pretty pointless, drivers tend to stand on their brakes as they approach and then stand on the accelerator as soon as they have passed.

The practice of mounting a fixed camera at the bottom of a hill on a long straight road seems particularly devious. I recently saw a mobile camera in a layby in just such a position in Yorkshire.

The vagueness of ACPO guidance is also tiresome, 78 is the new 70.
