Roof bars (that don't whistle!)

Featured Replies

Hi guys, new here! Just bought a new roomsters scout 1.6tdi in black and I absolutely love it! Such an awesome wee car :) I put roof bars on it from machine mart so I could mount a bike carrier but it causes a horrible whistling noise at any speed about 40mph! I was wondering if what bars you guys ran and how you get on with them?

I should note my car came with roof rails.

Thanks in advance, Martyn

Is it the bars or the cycle carrier mounted to the bars, when I say bars I don't mean the roof rails that came with the car. Try the bars on the roof rails without the cycle carrier to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the response, I tried it without the cycle carrier and it was the bars which were the issue.

I have used Whispbars on both my Yeti and previously a Roomster. They are virtually silent at all speeds I have found, being an aerodynamic shape, though I have no experience of fitting cycle carriers to them.

If you Google Whispbar they have a website,, also sold by the roof box company.

Not sure which bars you have but my thule bars whistled until I realised I hadn't put the rubber strip in the centre gully.

Iv just ordered the thule aero bars with the dimples in. £160 but if they're quiet they'll be worth every penny. Iv found wrapping square bars with the grey foam that is pipe lagging significantly reduced the noise on a previous van i had.

I bought a dog guard from The Roof Box Co. they are very good. I thought they were a bit on the expensive side and managed to haggle them down a bit!

Wrap them in pipe lagging

I covered the groove in my bars with a strip of electricians tape - No more whistle.
